Is Mecklenburg a tornado magnet? | CharlotteObserver.com & The Charlotte Observer Newspaper (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/04/25/2247548/mecklenburg-a-tornado-magnet.html - broken link)

Anyone else see this article. Very interesting. Yet, I have asked so many people about their experiences and they say "hail" once in awhile.

Lived here 45 years and can only recall a minor tornado that hit Charlotte over on West Blvd near Billy Graham. I want to say 1989 or around then.

Hard to imagine Mecklenburg being called a tornado magnet with only 1 in the area in the past 60 years (according to the article).

Is Mecklenburg a tornado magnet? --- NO!

Has the Charlotte Observer reduced itself to a useless tabloid ---- YES!

Honestly, I don't understand why anyone bothers with this fishwrap anymore.

There was supposedly a F0 on North Tryon Street near Atando a few years ago. Can you even call that a tornado?

No, we are not a tornado magnet.

I looked at the same database and it shows Wake county with 30 tornadoes in that timeframe. Maybe they don't consider that "our region".

Here are tornado stats for other counties since 1950:

Lincoln: 19
Cleveland: 17
Iredell: 16
Catawba: 15
Gaston: 13
Union: 13

So Meck may have the most but not by much, I wouldn't call that a magnet.
