The sound in the Indian Land has grown increasingly louder over the last week and today while taking my dog out one landed on my shoulder. I enjoy the sound, but am not too big on insects touching me. Although, I welcome Summer with open arms.
Oh, they are definitely in Waxhaw. We heard them Monday and then again Thursday and from there on out, there is a constant sound of them during the day. I saw a few flying individually, but none in mass swarms :::creepies::: thank goodness. I am the biggest bug-o-phobe but mustered up the courage to get out and plant some things in the garden today, so it cant be all that bad Though, my fiance did mention seeing a swarm a little ways from the house, that parted as he drove through. Yuck!
Still nothing in my neighborhood on Quail Hollow Rd. It depends on the ground temperature from what I've read. It needs to be at least 67º before they surface. Maybe there are parts of Charlotte where the ground temp has been able to sustain that. Anyway, I am anxiously awaiting...
It's funny, I'm in Indian Land too and haven't heard them yet. They seem to be quite sporadic so far on where they are showing up. Heard them in Pineville but nothing at Quail Hollow.
Well to me on the greenway it was a constant high pitched drone. On youtube, google 13 or 17 year cicadas and you will see a bunch of videos on them with sound.
I think the difference in seeing them is where you live. The more green space, the more cicada friendly. Maybe others posters can add based on where they live/whose hearing it. I live on a 6 acre treed area, and when going towards town it is much less noticeable. I didnt hear it at all in pineville, nor indian trail. But I heard it all over Waxhaw, 521 is buzzing with the noise. It sounds liek your in the movie "a bugs life"- its even amplified in some areas, sounds like surround sound. We ate on my porch yesterday, but its screened
They are very prevalent in Waxhaw right now. We've heard them for the past two weeks.
