We will have visitors coming to Charlotte and we were wondering what the major attractions in and around the city are. We were thinking about
- Plantations
- Hikes
- Museums
- Nice cities w/ old town
... or anything else that might come to your mind.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

If you want to really impress your guests, go the The US National Whitewater Center. I went 2 weeks ago and loved it! Very impressive facility, fun and I thought a good value for my $.

A quick overview of my favorite museums/historic sites in the area:
Uptown - Museum of the New South is great and tells the story of, well, the New South (so post Reconstruction) with a wonderful core exhibit; Mint Museum of Craft + Design has a nice collection and one of the only museums devoted the crafts in the country; Discovery Place is the science center, although not so exciting if you have mainly adults in your group (mainly because frequently there are so many kids you can get a turn to play yourself!).

In Charlotte not far from Uptown: the Mint Museum has a wide art collection with a great temporary exhibition right now, the Charlotte Museum of History & Hezekiah Alexander homesite is wonderful and you can tour the oldest home in county dating to 1774.

On the outskirts of Charlotte: Latta Plantation in north Mecklenburg is a good site in a location that still manages to feel a bit remote and farm-like; the James K. Polk Memorial is in Pineville (although you should know before you go that none of the buildings are original to the site, it is just on land that the Polks owned, but they are period buildings and they frequently have great open hearth cooking demonstrations).

Hope those suggestions help keep you and visitors entertained!

Carowinds Amusement Park. Great rides. A bit pricey though.

For a nice hike I would drive over to Crowders Mt on the other side of Gastonia - about 45 minutes out of Charlotte. Here is the park website:

Division of Parks and Recreation--Crowders Mountain State Park, Directions (http://www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/crmo/directions.html - broken link)

However, this park has two ranger stations - the main one and the one on the side of the mountains where the rock climbers go. I personally prefer the trails and view from the top of the rock climbers side. Here are directions to find it without having to go to the main ranger station to get them:

Go down I-85 (like going to gastonia), exit Edgewood Road (exit 13) and go South. Continue straight thru the stop light where the road name will turn to Archie Whitesides Rd. Continue a couple of miles to Linwood Rd. where you will take a left and then a right into the park access. Climbing is free so if you are lucky you will be able to watch some climbers once you get to the top
