I recently llost my job, boyfriend and my apartment so i decided to relocate to Charlotte NC. Does anyone have any ideas regarding affordable safe locations to live? which areas to stay away from? any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated.

Many of the people who would respond to your post would tell you to not come down to Charlotte without a job lined up. They would also tell you the unemployment rate is higher in Charlotte than in NY. If you're confused in NYC, then don't bring the confusion to Charlotte.

If you have no job and little money you may want to find an apartment community that doesn't require you to have a job. A few places I checked out west only do a credit and background check which is nice.

I'm interested in how one passes a credit check with no job and little money. I suppose if you have never defaulted that might work but if I was a landlord I would think twice about renting to someone like that.
Like......how does she pay my rent?

In your other posts you mention you want to "live near the water". Don't know about that in Charlotte. You also mentioned you have $1200 a month for a few months. I think that is too little to make a major move without a job.Any chance you could move in with friends or family and build a larger nest egg? How about a shared apt. in NYC?

My advise on moving to CLT...don't do it.

Thanks for all the input. In regards to moving without a job, is it really any different from staying without a job? Bottom line I don't have a job here and don't have a job there. Also 1200 a month would go a longer way in Charlotte than in NYC seeing as the basic rent in NYC for a one bedroom is 1200 per month.
I would be the first to say "don't move without a job" but at the end of the day there is nothing here for me. I need an escape and a break and a vacation just isn't enough
Whether I'll move..... I hope so. I don't mind sharing a place with someone until i find a job. if this move fails and i can't find a job I can always come back to nyc and move back in with my mom. I'm at a point where I can set my foot out into the world and fail without to much damage.
In regards to credit and unemployment, yes you can have good credit and be unemployed it's all about planning and saving.
It's all about life style decisions, can you do without certain material things? Yes, i can but i can't do without piece of mind that's why i want to move. Hopefully it'll all work out

Believe me you won't feel like you are on vacation for very long. You will feel equally as miserable here as you would in NY if you can't find a job. Do some research on this board about unemployment and you will quickly see some really tough situations.

As far as your money lasting longer here than there.....not much longer. $3,600 will get you 3 months rent in NY, and possibly 4 - 4 1/2 months here. Food is more expensive here than NY. Gas is cheaper, car insurance is cheaper....that's about it.

The difference not having a job here vs. there is at least in NY you know someone that could potentially get you a job. You will know no one here and right now networking seems like the best way to get your foot in the door as far as unemployment.

Maybe you should hang on to that $3,600 and put some resume's out there using a Charlotte address and get a feel for how tough the job market really is here.

Finding a job in a larger city with lower unemployment that you already have roots and networking opportunities in is a heck of a lot easier than finding a job in a new city, no roots or network, very little knowledge of the city and layout, etc. Like it or not, employers usually give preference to local candidates, and you will be disclosing you're only recently local with applications. This may or may not be a factor, depends on the candidate and job. You're already competing against a lot of people already here with no job. You will have to keep your existing NY plates on your car if you come down, or you'll be looking at a huge investment to switch them to NC; this will be a significant dent in your savings.

What happens if you can't land a job?
Don't like it here?
Run out of money?

My suggestion, speaking as a young person who took a leap to try something new for the sake of employment .. figure out what kind of job you want and go after it regardless of where it takes you. If you focus only on one region, you're limiting your prospects and chance of employment. If you limit yourself to a job in all regions, you have many prospects. Move in with mom to reduce your expenses, look for a job. Use your money to get the job. Getting out of NY for "a fresh start" means there are 49 other states you can consider. If you land a job in an area you don't like, at least you have income again and the ability to save and gain experience for your next move.
