There are usually one or two panhandlers as you get off of I-77 southbound and turn left onto Tyvola. Lately they appear to be an organized group wearing yellow reflective jackets and wearing IDs making them appear to be legit or some organized group.
Does anyone know what group they are with? They have some handouts with a cross on it so I wonder if they are a church or just trying to cash in on people's good Christian nature.
Today I witnessed a "shift change" where a car dropped off a new person and picked up someone. Reminded me of the local magazine scammers that drive around from place to place this time of year.
I imagine they are breaking some state or local panhandling laws but have not tried to look into this yet. I got a picture of the car and license plate (NC plate) that did the drop off today.
Tomorrow I will try to film a video of them giving their pitch. What should I ask them?
(I am not trying to give any legit group a hard time but these guys are really aggressive and asking people to roll down their windows to hear their pitch. This crosses the line for me)
If I recall correctly, there is a panhandling ordinance that went into effect a few years ago in Charlotte. I have never seen it enforced anywhere though. Might be worth a call to your local police division to ask about it and maybe get them to act on it.
And those groups get on my nerves with their pitches and all that junk. If you feel like you need to peddle your version of the word of God at an intersection while wearing a reflective vest, maybe your version isn't as attractive as you might think.
A few weeks ago, I saw a group on all medians at 16 and Mt. Holly-Huntersville. A few cars behind me, a cop turned on his lights. The traffic light turned green and I continued on my journey, so I did not see if the cop was pulling someone, or stopping to question the panhandlers.
Interesting; this must be a relatively recent phenomenon. When I lived in on Tyvola (as recently as last year), I saw a straggler or two panhandling but not an organized group.
I saw the same group today at the corner of Reagan and Sugar Creek (great area by the way). They had yellow vest and buckets full of cash while handing out little orange flyers. I did not stop to hear the pitch but they appeared pretty aggressive in their approach.
