We have taken our scouts to Stone Mountain Park in Elkin. They have primitive camping and lots of places to get in the water. Also check out Brown Mountain in Collettsville.
Stone Mountain's backcountry sites are definitely what our OP is looking for
I highly recommend sites E or F.
E is smaller, but right on the rushing creek. F is the most private
We went to wilson creek area this past weekend and had an amazing time! We spent alot of our day at harpers creeks falls. So much fun, jumping off the rocks, sliding down the lower falls. The wilson creek gorge got kinda busy but was still alot of fun. Definetly will be going back there again. I think im going to try stone mountain next! thank you all so much for all the posts
There are a few campsites, right on the lake, at Keowee-Toxaway state park. I think they are $12 a day. You can swim in the lake right near these campsites, my son and I do it often. The area of the lake they are on is a quiet cove, near one of the jumping off rocks at the lake, which is really fun to do. You do have to hike in about 2 miles to get to these campsites, but it's a really gorgeous place to camp!
