One thing that has been driving me nuts since I moved here, was numerous people stop at speed bumps. Unless theres a stop sign, you dont STOP at the speed bump. Yes, your not going to do 25mph over it, but, it doesn't seem to make sense when they stop, then roll over it, then go. Its even worse when its a big SUV or truck, as apparently they dont want to take advantage of their expensive off road automobiles with a minor speed bump. None the less.... any reason for this behavior?

Depending on the speed bump I may come to almost a stop if I'm in my car. It sits a bit lower than many vehicles, and has a tight suspension, and low profile tires, so between not wanting to stress it or me, I'd rather slow down a bit more than may be absolutely necessary. The tall, narrow bumps can drop my car off the other side right onto the frame, and that's not a pleasant sound.

If I'm in my truck, and the speedbump is one of those long, low ones like the ones in Eastover and Myers Park, I hardly slow down at all.

I come to a complete stop at a speed bump just cause I don't like the sudden jerk I feel when I go over them(my suspension needs replacing) I do coast over the speed humps though.

Yes there is reason....most people do it for one of two reasons, perhaps both....

1. they don't want to be shaken by the car going over the bump

or

2. they don't want to do damage to their vehicle (this is the case with most I believe)

Drives me nuts too when people come to complete stop at speed bumps. Heck, drives me nuts when people come to a complete stop at regular right turns when they have the clear right of way.

My car is lowered approximately 2" from the ground. Do you really have to ask why I don't want to scrape it?

There's a local shopping center by my house where my motorcycle frame scrapes the speed bump. There's no way I'm going to hit those with my other vehicles.

If I didn't come to nearly a stop b/f going over a speed bump, the front end of my Miata would be sitting in my lap.

If I don't come to a near stop the kids in the back will be jerked in their car seats, and I get to hear all about it.

They don't want to spill their beer by getting bounced. It can fizz up and get all over you.
