I thought the loop hole for repeat offenders was dealt with a couple years back? It seems as if this type of crime along with home invasions went down by a lot in the last couple years. Regarding rehabing.... I don't know how much is spent here (Meck or Union county or for that matter NC as a whole) on re-rehabilitation programs but they do work when done right. Although this is a different topic for another thread....
Yes, I think having a change of guard at the DA's office has addressed that at least in part. But since repeat offenders continue doing their thing, month after month, either the problem is huge or dozens are being released w/o spending much time behind bars.

There are "re-entry" and "mainstreaming" programs here in MECK paid for by city/county $$$. I have tried to get direct budget info on them and also - recidivism rates - but so far, have never been able to get the scoop. Perhaps if I were more motivated, I would write letters and demand accountability . . . you would think it would be an issue the CLT OBS would run with . . . city/county dollars being in short supply . . . it would be nice to have access to 5+ year "success" rates and full accounting of $$$ spent in those programs - wh/ often use resources from several different sources, making it hard to pin down. I haven't checked lately; maybe there is something out there other than anecdotal testimonials on websites, lol.

Concord Mills Mall transitions with thugs "Mall Maggots" every Saturday evening starting at 6 6:30pm. Just look for yourself. Robberies & theft occur all day long, every day. This one hit the news cause it involved a helpless female with her children. Glad no one was hurt. I am on the look out for a Black Lincoln Towncar with tinted windows, as should everyone else here.

Could be. I'm thinking Susan Smith syndrome. Reminds me of how she described the mythical "Black" that kidnapped her kids. I could be wrong, but it could be anything given the very poorly written piece of information from WSOC.

On the conversation about Rodney Monroe, Concord Mills is out of his jurisdiction. This would have nothing to do with his job performance.

Agree that Monroe has nothing to do with this discussion.

My concern is w/ thugs in the region and how they are getting increasingly brazen, not with the performance of LE, regardless of what jurisdiction.

I have never heard this - and have never observed it, either.

Exactly. That simple. Not a racist reporter cooking up a story. Not a friend robbing a friend. Thats my point.

Heh. Haha, WSOC just edited that article and changed "A Black" to "A Black Man". I guess they read this forum.

WHen I read it, I wondered if there had been a typo - and someone simply left off the word "man" in that article. It happens.

Totally agree with you - I think you are right. It was a crime of opportunity. Saw a woman with small children and took advantage of her vulnerability.

I wonder what the thug in this situation would have thought had the victim been his own mom when he was a little kid?

Crime is unacceptable. It was unacceptable when Caine killed Abel. I find it interesting that so many folks seem to want to downplay crime as if there is some "acceptable" level of crime in this city - some magic sweet spot w/ the crime stats - that will put us all into this happy place of feeling like our city is "safe."

I hope our DA is taking a harder stance on repeat offenders instead of pleading everything down and letting repeat offenders back on the street w/in hours of committing an offense. That is something we should all be watching - the repeat offenders - as that is directly tied to how effective our justice system is here. Plus, a lot of money goes to reintegrating perps back into life here in Charlotte once they have served their time. How's that working? Is it? Do we know?

People should be asking questions and demanding accountability from the justice system rather than spending effort attempting to distract from or minimize the situation.
There has always been crime, there will always be crime. Accepting that fact is not downplaying or minimizing, it is just acknowledging what is real.

It is all about context, and what is relative. What I think many of us are saying is that relative to other cities where we have lived, we consider Charlotte to be safe. Not crime free, not perfect, but relatively safe. Just because some feel safe here doesn't mean everyone will, and vice-versa.
