hi there,

planing for a romantic get away for a few days with boyfriend.
looking for a place within a few hours driving distance.
beautiful environment (resort, B&B in the country or mountain with character, others?)
plenty of things to do (walk in the town, hiking, kayaking, good eats, fun things to see, etc)

any ideas? if you can recommend the name of the place to stay other than city name would be better.

thanks!!

It really depends on the activities that you like doing. For example I like history so a romantic getaway for me would be Charleston, SC. I'd stay by the market at the Planters Inn.

Check out Chateau Elan this side of Atlanta. I took my wife there for her 25th b-day and she loved it! Spa was great, food was great, wine tasting was great.....lots of cool features.

Not sure of your budget?

But our favorite is Charleston, SC....some of favorite spots to stay are Mills House, Governor's House Inn or Vendue Inn. There are great things to do there with wonderful food! It is very, very hot down there right now.

There are also some really nice B & B's at Lake Lure, not quit as expensive. You can also rent cabins there on the lake or at the base of Chimney Rock.

I have been to Shelton Vineyards and plan to go back. Nearby accomodations at the Hampton Inn may not be as romantic as you want. The vineyard property is beautiful, and they have a nice grill/restaurant, and lots of wine to taste. It is right off I77 so very easy to get to.

Another place that I have not been to, but looks intriguing, is Chateau Morrisette Winery in Virginia near the Blue Ridge Parkway. It looks to be about a 2 1/2 hr drive from Charlotte. Check out their website for activities, etc (looks like they don't provide lodging at the winery)

Charleston, Charleston, and Charleston.

Having said that, New Bern has some cool stuff, old B&B's and lots of yakking opportunities and you are 45 or so minutes from beach.

Washington, NC, is not quite as fancy as some spots in NB, but has a great ***/bike store and lots of yakking.

Belhaven NC has a wonderful, totally under-appreciated inn/b&b. Off the beaten path

I would also recommend strongly, Galax, VA area and a ride on the Virginia Creeper bike trail. The BEST THING YOU WILL EVER DO.

Good luck, have fun.

lln
