Hi All - you guys must have the most active City Data forum going right now, so much great info.
Question: One of the criteria for relocating is that our daughter have good college options without having to fly a thousand miles - we want to keep her within driving distance as long as we can!
If we were to relocate, what good public and private colleges are within a few hundred miles? I know Duke and UNC, but what other ones are there - even in other states?
Wake Forest is about 1 1/2 hours, Davidson is next door, Virginia is probably 4-5 hours, South Carolina is not bad, Elon is OK, N.C. State is good for engineering, UNC Charlotte might be considered by some second-tier, but it's quite good for certain majors (business, engineering). The entire UNC system is solid with the exception of a few schools.
300 miles is a large range. That would take you several other states.
In Charlotte: UNC Charlotte, Kings College, Queens University, Johnson C Smith University, Pfeiffer University, Johnson and Wales, Wake Forest Graduate School of Management, The Art Institute of Charlotte, EPCI College of Technology, The Aveda Institute, Dudley Beauty School, Empire Beauty School, Brookstone College of Business, Central Piedmont Community College
There are others in the metro area such as Belmont Abbey, WIngate and Davidson.
FYI- UNC Charlotte is the 4th largest school in the UNC system (17 institutes).
North Carolina State - engineering, veterinary medicine, textiles
Lots of private all girls schools in NC & VA if you are interested in that sort of thing.
Don't worry though, there is always an all boys school close by...
Within 300 miles, you'll also be getting into Atlanta, UGA, South Carolina... even Auburn (in Alabama) is only 350 miles away. So, as you can see - that's a HUGE range for distance.

And Richmond, Va., Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia Beach area. Yep, plenty of options for the guy.
UNC Wilmington has been getting good publicity recently (including praise in US News & World Report and the Princeton Review) and is getting much more difficult to get into. You can read more about it here: University of North Carolina Wilmington (http://www.uncwil.edu/www/rankings.html - broken link)
