I am having my car inspected today and they told me the price plus a $6 sticker fee. I thought we got rid of inspection stickers a few years ago. Why the "sticker" fee?

The total fee should only be $30. I don't think they are legally allowed to charge more.

We don't have windshield stickers any longer. The fee is $30.00.

The state still calls the $6 a sticker fee. You just don't get the sticker on your car anymore. It is how the state can continue to charge for a non existent service or product.

$30 if you have to have the emissions test.

My 94 did not require it so it was only $13.60 for that vehicle.

Based on this page:

NCDOT: Vehicle Emissions & Safety Inspection

I don't see anything about a sticker fee, and the $30/$13.60 appears to be correct. That's what I remember for my two vehicles as well.

Why did they get rid of the stickers? I was told it was done in the hopes that we would forget to have our inspection done - then NC could fine us.

You also won't receive your registration each year if you haven't had your inspection done as well.

They will send you your registration notice before you get your car inspected. It just tells you that you need your car inspected before they will accept your renewal. If you do it online, big red text will tell you that your car has not been inspected and to have it inspected, then try again.
