Default Registered Sex Offenders: Mooresville vs. Cornelius

According to CityData's numbers, in 2009 Mooresville had 41 registered sex offenders, which is a ratio of 1 sex offfender per 540 people. Cornelius had 1 registered sex offender, which is a ratio of 1 to 14,783. Can anyone explain the disparity? Mooresville numbers are FAR above average. Thanks.

Here's the NC list. North Carolina Offender Registry

Here's the national list. National Sex Offender Registry - Family Watchdog

The lists are not exactly the same, so check both. I can't answer your question but this may help in answering it.

What do you have for the populations of Mooresville and Cornelius?

With 1 sex offender per 14 whatever thousand people, the populatin must 14 whatever thousand people.

With 41 offenders per 540 people, the population is whatever 41 times 540 is.
Twenty two thousand something.

Not sure where CD gets it's stats from but according to City of Mooresville the estimated population was 26,000 in 2007,but this won't include anywhere that has a Mooresville postal address but isn't inside the city ie most of 28117.
CD is quoting 22,000 as the population in 2009-which seems way off the mark.

I assume the registered sex offenders list numbers are anyone who has a Mooresville postal address, so to work out your ratios you need to know the population of 28117 and 28115 .
I think it must be closer to 40,000 than 20,000 but maybe I'm wrong.

Of course the same may be true with Cornelius ie that many people are living outside the city limits.

Have no idea why there is such a difference-don't know enough about the demographics of sex offenders to be able to comment.

Could it be that Cornelius has situated their parks/schools/daycares in such close proximity that registered sex offenders aren't able to live very many places inside their city limits? RSO are required to reside some certain distance from these areas. but don't forget that RSO are complying with the law. The ones who refuse to register are still out there in stealth mode.

Good Point, but not sure that would be any different in either city/town

However, I would say that a lot of day care facilities in Mooresville are not within the city limits because the people most likely to use day cares are living on the periphery or outside the limits in 28117
The day cares are going to stay outside the limits for cheaper taxes if they can.

Um, how to say this w/o sounding like a jerk? Going to North to Mooresville, it's like you cross over a line. On the other side, folks are noticeably more farm and blue collar, less formal education, etc. Property values are considerably lower and it's much more rural. You probably wouldn't hear anyone use the word "disparity".

Cornelius is not diverse. Mooresville is diverse. Just go look around Walmart. Or, it could be that there is more affordable housing for perverts in Mooresville?

You have lost me here. Iredell County has always been primarily agricultural, since it was first homesteaded in the 1700s.

What does any of that have to do with sex offenders?
