Charlotte is one of only 14 major U.S. metro markets to see a net increase in retail jobs during the past five years. But that gain is a mere 0.68 percent.
And the Charlotte area’s 88,500 retail-job total as of June is down 1.12 percent from a year earlier.

This has been a horrible year for retail in Charlotte. Shopping centers that were thriving just a year ago are now very distressed i.e. Crown Point/Galleria. Independence is closing down at a rate so fast it's scary.

The down retail market isn't the only factor for Independence... it's also the fact that Indy is turning (as it should) into a freeway.
I can't wait until all the businesses on Indy are dead and gone to be honest. IMO a lot of those businesses are dragging down the entire east corridor. Let it be a freeway, let's revitalize Monroe, Central and other adjacent commercial/retail district corridors!

Exactly, its mostly the highway. If you want to see the "anti-Independance Blvd", just keep heading South and go over to the Ballantyne area. That area is booming.

Independence is in shambles, it once was a thriving area. The decrease in stores just seems to be spreading further out as well.

Exactly... the difference is amazing. New development and openings galore.
So you can keep this in perspective, this is the list. It shows the growth rate over 5 years.
McAllen-Edinburgh, Texas
Austin
Houston
San Antonio
Ogden Utah
El Paso
Provo, Utah
Omaha
Salt Lake City
Buffalo, NY
Raleigh , NC <-- Beats Charlotte
New Orleans
Tulsa
Charlotte
Baton-Rouge
Raleigh, NC
The growth rate over the last year however isn't good at all. It fell. Charlotte's lost retail jobs and on that same list of cities, ranks 81. This article is an example of the Business Journal cherry picking statistics.
In other words, places are closing in this city, not opening as that article suggests.

As usual, you're the only one who is "cherry picking". The title of the thread and the article clearly state its concerning the addition of "retail jobs since 2006". Which by the way, means we've gained during the recession. Doesn't matter if its one job or one hundred, the net is a gain. Give it up. You actually don’t really have a good handle on the what’s happening in the retail industry in the Charlotte. Recall, you’re the same person who said Northlake mall would never get an Apple Store…and yet, they are getting one.
