We are moving to Charlotte, NC and looking through the Great Schools website searching for good schools, I noticed some elementary schools run from K-3 Here in FL it's not that way, its a standard Elementary K-5 Middle 6-8 then High 8-12. My question is what happens once your child reaches 3rd grade?? Do they go to another elementary school??? Can someone help me with this......thanks

Hi, I can only tell you about Mooresville Graded Schools because that's where my children are. K-3 is elementary,4-6 is intermediate,7-8 is middle and 9-12 is highschool. All are in seperate buildings.Mooresville is also considering pulling 9th grade from the highschool and having a 9th grade academy, but the budget won't allow for that yet.

I can't think of any school that only houses K-3.

Most schools are as you are used to: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. I know in Stanley (Gaston County) kids go to one elementary for grades K-2 and another elementary for grades 3-5. The schools are about a mile apart.

Thanks for all the help. I was also told that some NC schools are all year round? Does anyone have children in a school all year round?? And just to make sure I understand it, some schools are K-3 is elementary,4-6 is intermediate,7-8 is middle and 9-12 is highschool and some of these are all year round. We just started the process of looking around for the best town to move to and so far from what we are able to gather from online sources we like either Davidson, Mooresville, Huntersville and poss south Charlotte between Matthews and Pineville. We will soon be there for a few days to research in person. The school decision has been the hardest. Thank you all for any imput you can give.

Again most (probably 90+%) schools are k-5, 6-8, 9-12. I may be wrong but I don't think any Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools are year round (Davidson, Huntersville, Charlotte, Matthews and Pineville are in this district). I'm not sure about Moorseville. Someone will correct me if I'm mistaken

Year round schools go for 9 weeks and then have a 3 week vacation. Some districts have multiple tracks with different calendar schedules. Smaller districts may have one track schedule.

Union county has some schools that are year round. I wish CMS had that option as well.

Davidson and Huntersville both are zoned for CMS schools and for the most part they have the traditional elementary/middle/high. There are also quite a few private options as well in those areas.
Mooresville (28117) is Iredell County schools and is that way as well. Mooresville (28115) is MGSD and is as the poster described above.
Not sure about anything south of this area.
The majority of our research prior to moving was regarding schools and we opted for Mooresville (28115) to be in the MGSD.

I am in Catawba County Schools (Hickory) and ours go K-6 elementary and 7-8 middle then 9-12 high school. I think it seems a bit scary to have a 7 year age difference at an elementary school. Those 6th grade kids look huge!!
