What you're talking about looks like the Goodyear blimp version of a bee, right?

This bee (i'll call it that for now) was about 4 inches long, and just looked menacing. It had a HUGE stinger area, probably 2-3 inches alone, and it was striped black and yellow. It had massive wings that were 2-3 inches long. It had huge feeler/antennas that were a good inch long. I've been scouring bug encyclopedias with no luck. It's body is the size of one of my fingers. Eep!!
This?

I think I know what you're talking about, I saw them at Myrtle Beach in town area. They look like a bee dragon fly, they seemed to hover like dragon flies.

Could it be a Mud Dauber type of wasp?

It has what it seems to be two body and I've seen some long ones here (about 3-4 inches).
Don't know how bad their sting is, but they look scary when they fly due to their size.
