Yep, it is a romantic experience to do your own - and much much cheaper.
Beef/chicken/pork in hot oil, bread dipped in cheese, seafood dipped in vegetable stock, fruits/sweets dipped in chocolate.
I have made a beer and cheddar fondue that was phenomenal. I also have done a lot of seafood fondues - scallops, shrimp, cubed salmon, etc. The sauces to dip it in are what make it special.
If you do chicken you can make a nice thai peanut sauce for it.
No but you can do it at home. For the cost of the meal you can buy an electric pot and find recipes online. Kids will love it.
Exactly what I was going to post. The romantic Melting Pot experience would be completely lost on children, but they could enjoy at least the food at home.

Romantic? For a 8 and 12 yr. old? Chris Hansen would like you to have a seat over there.
I was wondering if anyone would know of any other restaurant, I figured MP was the only one. Dining in is almost always cheaper but the OP sounds like and doesn't want to mess with the hassle.
I guess I should have re-read the post LOL
Some cubed bread, some melted cheese, a tossed salad - how difficult is that once you have the pot?
For me, it's always been the clean up. Plus, I know whatever I make isn't going to taste as good as theirs. I agree that the price is crazy but we don't go but more than once a year so I don't worry about it too much.
My 12-year-old asked to go there on his birthday - and LOVED it. That may have been the most expensive meal I've ever paid for! But he really, really enjoyed it, as did his friend that came along. I saw lots of families there, and a girl was having a big birthday party with a bunch of her friends; they all looked to be around 11 or 12.
It wasn't a romantic experience, but we sure had fun! If you can afford it, it's worth the experience.
Thank you everyone for your ideas. charlottegal, I wish I could have read your post before last night. I checked yesterday afternoon and no one had answered so I gave up. It was my son's 13th birthday and that was his request. I looked up the menu and the prices were a little high for us. I think he would have liked it, but the 8 year old is so picky, I thought it would just be a waste for him. We ended up taking him out to another restaurant, and in reality could have gone to the Melting Pot for just a little more $$. We will definitely keep all the suggestions in mind. My husband and son love cooking(so much more than I do) and love experimenting the things. Maybe we will try the restaurant and then do the home thing afterward.
We own a pot and did it at home for relatives. The kids loved it. They came down from ny and a year later are still talking about it. And clean up is not bad! I was worried about that too but it's easier than other meals actually.
