What urbancharotte said is correct. If you want to rely on transit in Charlotte, you will be better served living close to Uptown (5-6 miles) and working Uptown. The reality is that if you choose to live farther out or work outside of Uptown, your commute time will typically be better in a car. Case in point, when I commuted to an office (I currently work at home = best commute of all), my public transportation option was to ride a bus Uptown (30 mins), transfer to another bus (20 mins wait) and then ride an additional 30 mins to my office. Total commute time to and from work was 2 hrs and 40 mins a day. Total commute time in my car, 40 mins. And I only live about 10 miles from Uptown!

As someone that has to use CATS due to health issues I use it. It is not the best(yes improvements need to be made) however it is a useful way to get around. Some buses going to some areas are scary, but having traveled on transit systems in other sities that were much worse. CATS is what it is.

The further you live from center city it inst that good unless you take the express bus. If you travel thru an area that has riff raff living there, you will have to side with that riff raff. Now I have never personally been bothered or threatened. The majority of roders are hard working people, students, elderly or people like myself that have to ride, I have seen unruly activity, however if we are honest we see that everywhere, even when driving in our high and mighty communities.

The thing is CATS is run by the the city/county. So if we want to make a change or have a voice in what goes on, we can do so. So unless you want to be a part of the solution why complain? Especially when we really dont know we are speculating on what we think we see or hear.
How's this. I have rode CATS off and on most of my life. I had a bad experience and seen other things within the downtown terminal quite frequently. I also rode the bus late at night on the way home from work when I was in my teens.

You could not pay me to ride these trains. Want to know why?
Walk around the main terminal Uptown anytime, and see for yourself.

I've walked around the main terminal quite a bit, and I still ride the trains. And buses.

Walking around and seeing for oneself apparently does not answer your question "want to know why?".

"Want to know why?" Is a common phrase used to answer a question sometimes. Politicaly correct? Proberly not, however still used quite a bit.

I have rode on most routes through out the city.

I also never been bothered day or night even as only white guy on the bus.
I once was spit at from outside the bus back in the 90's on route 8 but considering I was deep in the hood and it happened outside of bus.

The bus drivers mostly are nice and clean. I definitiely stand by they are reliable.
Someone mention the Gold Rush a free shuttle cant really judge how the system is. Besides they are doing away with gold rush once the street cars start up.

The transit center I have never ever seen any problems over the decades riding it and it does has all kind of walks of life.
'I once was spat at from outside the bus"

Something similar happened to me in 2008. My car had broken down , and I had to take 27 out Monroe Road. At Monroe and S.Amity , this car with two older ladies , and 3 teens in the back pulls up at the light. This little diarrhea drinking mofo looked me in the eye , and hawked , prior to spitting in my face. The car turned left , and to this day , I remember the plates. If I see his little a$$ again , I'll be sure to eat Tabasco prior to payback , LOL!! I'm kidding , I do remember the plates , but I'm not worried about 'him'. I'm sure someone will see it out walking one day , and decide to partake in a spot of 'kiddie porn' , to which he will have no choice but to submit. Little bastard.

That's awesome, but you couldn't pay me to go anywhere near there.
Even if I had a loaded 500 magnum with me.
