Can anyone tell me their insight on safety in the Carowinds amusement park area. I know there are many hotels off the interstate-is it safe for families to stay for a weekend around there? Food thoughts? Thanks.

Should be fine. I've never heard of any incidents around there or at their campgrounds.

If you are looking for budget hotels, there are several very close to Carowinds. I recently went to a Record & CD show at the Plaza Hotel across the street from the park. This place was a bit scary to me with the lack of security and it's owned & operated by Carowinds! The rates in the area are certainly cheap but I would recommend staying at a different exit unless you plan on going to and from the park during the day for a lunch break.

Two areas to consider with plenty of food choices are:

Ayrsley shopping area at I-485 & S. Tryon St.
- less than 10 mins from the Carowinds exit

Dave Lyle Blvd area of Rock Hill
- 11 miles south of Carowinds exit on I-77
- very quick drive (all interstate)

For the record, the Plaza Hotel is not owned & operated by Carowinds. In fact, it's not even listed on Carowinds website under recommended accommodations.

Thanks for the correction, Swampfoxer.

The company operating The Plaza Hotel is named "Carowinds Hotel Owner, LLC". According to the article below, the property was recently sold to the current operators.

The area is as safe as any area surrounding a "major" tourist attraction would be. The area itself is not bad or dangerous--- just lock your car doors and don't leave valuables in view in your car since there are A LOT of people from all walks of life that frequent touristy areas. Not trying to "scare" you--- we stayed at one of the hotels for a whole week before we moved here and it was fine. No one even tried to break into our car. And Carowinds itself seemed perfectly safe.

There were a few car break-ins a little while ago, but the guy was caught. You should be fine.
