Taking 218 is a good route, but I believe the road is planned to connect to I-485 and eventually, US 74 (Independence) will be an interstate. Eventually (thats assuming that one day our economy will rebound, Union county will keep growing and it seems like its better to build an interstate now while the county is still mostly rural, rather than try and build it 20 or 30 years from now when the county could have half a million residents or more.

According to the article the ruling was due by last Friday. Any idea why it got delayed?

Default What's going on with the Monroe Bypass Connector?

I thought a final decision was supposed to be made like two weeks ago. I can't say I am surprised by the delay, it seems that's what NC does best when it comes to building roads. At least here in the western piedmont. Although I did talk to someone who works close with the NCDOT and he said that the road will be build regardless, I guess no one can really challenge the state.

Union county is a Red county but not a Dixiecrat county. True Reds (Republicans) in NC vote GOP for national elections, democrats in locals, i.e Dixiecrat. Huge transplant population in W. Union county are clueless about this distinction. Governor who appoints commissioners on the NCDOT is Democrat (Blue), supported by East NC politics, and Dixiecrats.

In other words, this road is a long ways off.

Uh, I'm pretty sure that politics has nothing to do with the road being built, considering that the state has already purchased the land on which the connector will be built. The only thing standing in the way are the crazy environmentalist. The decision was supposed to be decided two weeks ago.

Good that this one got approved and can begin construction. The Garden Parkway in Gaston County however, I'm not sure that it's really necessary.

The Monroe Bypass was stopped in its tracks Thursday after a federal court said the state did not conduct the proper environmental impact studies.

My dream of never driving through Monroe again is delayed.

I would volunteer my weekends to help pave this road.
