I wondered if it was a little tornado. Our neighborhood lost at least 25 trees, pulled from the roots. There are also quite a few "bent" trees, I've never seen that before! From talking with neighbors this morning, I think about four people lost their decks to trees, and about four had major fence damage from falling trees.
Has anyone heard any "official" word about what exactly that was?

Well curiosity got the best of me and I did go out. Now that you mention it, it did kind of remind me of War of the Worlds..lol. Gee thanks...now that's what I'll think about the next time a big storm comes!

The report on TV said straight line winds, but they don't know everything. When we had the tornado years ago, I had water coming against the house from both directions. The trees were twisted around. Straight line winds will knock a tree straight over in one direction. Our swimming pool that had several feet of water in it was picked up and landed in our neighbors trees when the tornado happened. Straight line winds would not have done that. You are the best judge of how your damage happened. We really just had little twisters. North Carolina doesn't usually have huge tornados like they have out West. A neighbor had a porch which kept the water away from her windows and she said there were little gray areas (which were the twisters) and they destroyed everything in their path. This type of twister does not show up on radar, or so I was told this by the insurance company. They fixed everything but my nerves.
I wear out my floors when a storm comes. I guess I think a moving person is less likely to be hit by lightning. Check the wood on you houses, if you have any. Years ago we had some wood trim that looked like someone had tried to antique it. It was the wind knocking the hail against the house.

I'm in Monroe, just off of 75 and we had hardly any wind. I thought for sure we would and even took down the flag as a precaution. I did see a ton of limbs on the road this morning from about Wesley Chapel to Weddington all along 84. It's weird how isolated the heavy winds can be.

We're in New London, Stanly county. The wind was definately NOT a straight line wind here. It was twisting around in circles. It took down a pine tree in our back yard and had the corn across the street standing whirrling around. My hubby, who is from Mich. said he hasn't seen anything like that since he left Mich 30 years ago. And that was a tornado in Mich. It was crazy for sure. Things leaked here that have never leaked before. I sure wasn't going outside. The lightening strikes were one after another. We're fairly new here..6 months now from CA and I just figured this must be a norm here. Happy to hear I was wrong in my thinking!!

It was very localized *and* powerful. It uproot several trees, fortunately many in the wooded parts of the community. Lots of chairs flying around and the lighting storm was specular (besides the fact that we lost power for 7 hours). I drove to the Walmart in Monroe to buy a DC/AC converter for my car (so I could charge my laptop-still had work to do). As I drove up Waxhaw-Indian Trail to Independence, and got into Indian Trail, it was only light ran, as if nothing happened. It was amazing as to how localized it was...

That wasn't a twister , we had it in Mt. Holly too. Typical straight line winds, crazy stuff though! Quite freaky.

That is so weird. I had a dream that it rained there last night and I had no idea that it was storming there. How odd. Glad to hear that there's rain. Maybe now when we move out our poor little yard won't look like it belongs in Arizona.
