My husband and I may be potentially moving to Charlotte. We have lived in NY and Ft. Lauderdale, FL which has a lot of diversity and racial mixing. Like many others, we do not consider the bottom half of FL as "The South" due to all of the people who live there from all over the country (mostly northeasterners) and the world, and it is just a different culture there.

We have been living in Richmond, VA for the past several years which has been more of a culture shock. The people who are from here tend to be extremely cliquish and not mix with transplants. Also, the diversity is poor (mostly just 2 races) and races rarely mix. They still are very hung up on The Civil War.

There are job prospects for my husband in Charlotte. I have heard that Charlotte is a progressive city, like Atlanta, with a lot of transplants. I have heard it has a lot to do (more than Richmond) and is racially diverse. My question to you is, is it truly as diverse as places like Atlanta? How would you compare it to Richmond? Also, do the races mix together or do they keep to themselves mostly? I am not talking about the rest of NC, just Charlotte and the suburbs. Thanks.

Charlotte is a bit of a melting pot - not like New York or anything, but we have many people here from all over the world and we all coexist together just fine. Mixed race couples are very well accepted here. Just for example, we have number of German companies here, a growing Jewish community, many latinos and quite a few Vietnamese.

From this site:

Quote:
Races in Charlotte:
White Non-Hispanic (55.1%)
Black (32.7%)
Hispanic (7.4%)
Other race (3.6%)
Two or more races (1.7%)
Asian Indian (0.9%)
Vietnamese (0.8%)
American Indian (0.7%)
Other Asian (0.7%)
(Total can be greater than 100% because Hispanics could be counted in other races)
In most places you will find different races. Green (money) is what divides people here.

As for how Charlotte compares to Richmond, check out these threads.

Hey, you stole my standard quote

Very true, green is really the only color that matters in Charlotte!

You say you want diversity but you hope everyplace looks and feels like New York and South Florida. Cultural and racial dilution is the antithesis of diversity.

We live in a nice neighborhood where the homes start at $500k (i think?) and it is very diverse, like I stated before. The people who live across the street and two over are a black and white couple w/ 5 kids. To anyone who's worried, I wouldn't be at all.
