We relocated to South Carolina in April. While it is a great area, it is definitely the wrong "spot" for our family. I am just starting to explore other areas of Charlotte, but I was curious about commute times. My husband works in Ballantyne. While he would love to avoid 485, it may be inevitable. What are possible commute times from, say, Belmont? Mt. Holly? Or even Huntersville?

Thanks!
From any of those places you can't avoid 485. In fact the snarl on 485 at Pineville going to Ballantyne can be brutal.
I reverse commute to Indian Land from Uptown, and you wouldn't think going in the the opposite of traffic flow would be so frustrating. At first I thought getting to Indian Land you have to go through Ballantyne, but you don't I avoid I-485 and Johnston Road/Lancaster Highway at all cost. I take I-77 to Gold Hill Rd in Tega Cay and taking Springfield Parkway, much less stress and it's more scenic. I-485 is only brutal between I-77 and Johnston Rd.
Do not move to Huntersville if your husband works in Ballantyne. That commute would be brutal!
I can validate that IT IS BRUTAL. My husband does it after his company moved from the airport area. It is horrible - actually horrible does not describe it.
70 miles a day in traffic an hour each way IF there are no accidents.
They were supposed to move central to everyone but OOOPS the CEO lives in Ballantyne. All of the people who live North of Charlotte are on the lookout for a new job.
I'm not sure I understand why you would want to move up north of the city, in order to commute down to south Charlotte/Ballantyne.
There are a lot of areas on the southern side of the city that would make commuting much easier. If you're looking to be near lakes, there's the area around Lake Wylie. If you're looking for something rural, consider Waxhaw and Union County. And then there are the towns in South Carolina where you'd be able to come in for a quick commute: Rock Hill, Fort Mill, etc.
I agree with the previous two posters both...what makes the spot right? and maybe that spot could be some where close to Ballyntyne. There are lots of great spots all over south of the city. I also agree commuting ANYWHERE center city and north to ballyntyne would absolutely be horrible, I go from the airport area south evey day and if I don't leave by 4 I have to add an extra 20-30 minutes, no thanks.
During non rush hour times I can make it from Ballantyne to Mt. Holly/Belmont in half an hour.
