I currently live in Davidson, NC which is about 30-40 minutes north of uptown Charlotte and I absolutely love it! We do not have children yet (one on the way) but I've checked into the school system and they score very high (I believe both reading and math are around 95). The little downtown area (Main Street) is not all that exciting but it's quaint. There are several restaurants and shops and in the summer they do a lot for children...little festivals, face painting, pony rides...it's very cute. They also have something in the summer called "Concerts on the Green" which is on Sunday nights from 6-8. The Davidson College Symphony plays and you sit on the lawn and listen/drink wine, bring dinner and the kids are run around and eat Ben and Jerry's...it's a lot of fun. I'm disappointed that we will be moving to Tampa within the next year because I truly do love it here and will be very sad to leave.

Check out Salisbury, NC. It's north, right off I-85, exit 75. Small city/large town. Has good schools that I've heard (not having kids, it's more that I don't hear people complain about the schools than do -- as is done about Charlotte schools). Not much in the way of shopping or entertainment, but it has a nice downtown, plenty of churches, just a hop and skip from country land. I work with people whose spouses commute to Charlotte from Salisbury. They think the drive (and the bogdowns on I-85) are worth it.

Try Salisbury
I have lived in or around Salisbury for about 20 years. I'm only 27 so I have experienced the schools first hand. I have also made the trip to Charlotte at almost every possible day and time and with I-85 being redone the traffic is not bad at all. The East Rowan School district seems to have the best reputation around (that's where I went). Salisbury has most everything you need, although I prefer not to live in the "city" I live about 5 minutes from downtown. That's what's nice about Salisbury, there are many developments and back roads that are not in the city and don't have houses built on top of each other. It only takes about 40 minutes to get to uptown Charlotte from Salisbury. You also have High Rock Lake within 30 minutes for boating, swimming, or just relaxing.

There are several towns that fit what you are looking for, Davidson, Salisbury, Concors, Monroe, and some even closer in with the same small town feel, safety and great schools, like Harrisburg and some parts of Matthes and Mint Hill. Find yourself a good realtor who can guide you and answer your concerns
