Thank you for the advice, I've heard the exterior of the school and the grounds look very scary and run down. Im wondering does the education make up for the nontraditional settings or is the entire operation a mess.
With the state of NC opening Charter Schools passed the set number of 100 for next year you will see an influx of charter schools to choose from next year IMHO.
Thanks Slakkie, are you aware of any really good ones?? Do you know anything about Union Academy or Queens Grant? We are trying to look within the Union side of town or Matthews. Thanks
No I do not but I do know they are awarding them early February - I helping with a school up in North Charlotte. In fact I am not even sure that the schools can even announce that they might be a Charter.
No one knows how many will make the cut. But I do think next school year will be the best to get into a Charter.
Queens Grant is located near my house. The elementary/ middle school part was built about 8 years ago. It is a very nice facility and is by no means scary. They have started a new high school, but the only building they could find to move into close to the school was an older building which used to be a Driving Range turned church. Most of the classes are in trailers on the grounds. The town of Mint Hill is very supportive of the school and I feel certain they will find funding to build a new high school in the next few years. If your child is in elementary, they will probably be going to the new high school. One thing you need to know is that Queens Grant is a charter school and they have a lottery to get in. We tried a few times to get in, but never did.
Union Academy is a good school too. I know a couple of families who have their kids there. Either place would be good.
I have a friend with a son there. She said it is safe and gives a decent basic education in high school. It is not known to be as strong academically as Lake Norman Charter, not as creative a Davidson Community School and not as established for basic sports and activities and busing as Lincoln charter...but it is fine and the kids are well behaved.
I have another friend with kids at Union Academy. She is more prone to never acknowledge anything wrong with anything she has her kids in so she says it is outstanding...but she is not as objective as the mom I know with the son at Queens Grant. I willl say that the girls at Union Academy seem to be bright, motivated, confident (not arrogant) kids who are enjoying their high school experience.
My view on charter schools is this: APPLY. If you get in, research, visit again, research somemore...then decide. You lose nothing by applying.
