Hello. Early 20s, relocating to South Charlotte from Los Angeles, Cali and I'm nervous as heck about all the animals/wildlife you all have out there.. What all do I need to know? I'm terrified of dogs and hearing stories about Deer, Coyotes, Foxes, etc terrifies me! Will I have to bury myself indoors, or will I be okay taking a walk outside without something attacking? lol Don't laugh, I have a crazy fear of animals, but Charlotte is where my new life has to be. :-/ Sooo, are there any tips or anything I should know specifically about dealing with the animals? Are there lots of snakes in the summer time? I'm about to faint thinking about it.

Have you been to Charlotte? Because if you have then you would know it is not the *country* If you live in the city especially uptown you wont' have any issues. South Charlotte will have plenty of pavement to calm your fears.
Do not come to Huntersville - we have deer, possums, geese, ducks, rabbits as well as dogs.

First things first... And first of all, everyone here wears a deer whistle AT ALL TIMES. Be sure to keep it on a lanyard around your neck for easy access. Whenever you leave your home or apartment crack the door about two inches and give three short blasts on your deer whistle followed by a loud scream like "KEEEAAAAHHH" or "SUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEY". This will force the deer back just enough for you to have time to get in your car, where you'll be back on level playing ground again, SO LONG AS YOU KEEP MOVING.
Now the dang possums... Don't get me started on the possums. Have you ever seen a possum? They have a long snout full of razor sharp teeth and a rat like tail that they use for two purposes. First they use it to hypnotize their victims (you've heard the term "playing possum", right?) then, when their victim is in a trance-like state, they use their tail to batter or slap their victims about the neck and face to stun you just enough for them to bite off one of your fingers... Which is what they are after to begin with. They're like Vienna sausages to those little savage creatures. My best advice for possum defense is DON'T WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY. That really paints a target on your back. Other than that you have to be really careful, 'cause possums don't give a rats ass about your deer whistle.
I'll let someone else give you the skinny on squirrels and chipmunks, but suffice it to say just be glad if you don't have to carry nuts with you 24-7 (ask a guy).

You will be fine. I still try to understand fear of common animals such as dogs. I would think after living in LA. You would fear the common hood rat. Which in Charlotte they are a little tamer.

There's a lot of talk on this forum about the amount of snakes in Charlotte. There a few different kinds you're probably gonna run into. I wouldn't worry about the ones you might find in your yard, but the ones that slither their way into the toilet bowls. That can make for a nasty surprise in the middle of the night.

Actually the biggest thing to worry about is the dreaded Transplantasaurus. Those things tend to migrate and then b*tch, moan, whine, and complain about EVERYTHING. You'll see them outside mostly during the day because there's not much they can do at night. Their mating calls tend to vary depending on the region they came from (the northeast Transplantasaurus' tend to sound a little more aggressive than most). Unfortunately some lack a sense of direction and in spite of the complaining sounds they never return to where they migrated from.
The trick to keeping the Transplantasaurus out of your home is to leave bits of pizza outside. Southern pizza is a fine repellant to the Transplantasaurus and should keep your home perfectly safe.
If you survived the rats in LA County, surely you won't be troubled by wildlife in South Charlotte.
`We heard them in the walls,'' said Cline, 28, who rents a two-story home south of Ventura Boulevard. ``It's scary: You wonder if you'll wake up with (rats) on your face.''
Health officials and pest exterminators say such interlopers may be prevalent this summer as rats, mice and other critters scurry out of the foothills seeking suburbs of relief.
In addition to drawing coyotes into lush valley neighborhoods, rodents can also bear plague, typhus, hanta virus, and legions of bacteria that can contaminate food, utensils and household items.
``Rodents are pretty serious,'' said Dr. Jonathon Fielding, director of Los Angeles County Public Health Services. ``You don't want rats, mice and squirrels around if you have a choice.''
``There has always been a rodent problem in Los Angeles County,'' said Grace Shin, a senior inspector for the public health Vector Management Program.
``Because we haven't had much rainfall, there will be less foliage for them in the hills and vacant lots, they will most likely have to forage where food is available - in peoples' yards and inside their homes and garages.''
``It's a pretty good year for rats,'' said Brad Dusatko, owner of Protector Pest Control, a rat specialist who purged Cline's house of rodents. ``Rats will eat tomatoes, squash, dog food, fruits - and escargo.''
``It's scary stuff,'' added Robin Carpenter of Expert Pest Control of Mission Hills. ``They can get into auto engines, they chew on wires, they love attics and subfloors. They can be nightmares.''
