My husband has two relocation possibilities - one in Nashville and one in Charlotte. I'm trying to gather as much info about both places as possible but I'm personally hoping he gets the Charlotte job. We are in our early 30's with no kids and none planned, so we don't have to worry about school districts. I'd like to live close to a fun/funky/hip district where there's stuff to do but we would prefer not to pay over $900 for rent. Could you suggest some areas in which I could do a bit more research? Thanks everyone!

Get on over to Charlotte, it's a nice place to live

As far as fun and funky you may want to try to live in areas around uptown. These are neighborhoods where you will find coffe shops, unusual restaurants, gallary crawls and the like. The problem is that $900.00 might make it a little difficult. Check out homes to rent in places like Chantilly and Plaza Midwood. I'll see if I can post a few links to some currently for rent.

What about NoDa or Dilworth? NoDa is short for "North of Davidson". Definitely an up and coming funky, young neighborhood. Dilworth is nice for it's proximity to everything, nice older homes, good restaurants around, etc. $900 might be tough, though it depends on how much space you need.

While NoDa is touted as the "next big thing", and some people do have a higher tolerance level than I do for crime and enjoy living there - I never recommend it to any newcomer unfamiliar with what they may be getting in to. Many investors have bought in there and are flipping the beautiful homes they have rehabbed. But in my opinion, the neighborhood is still several years away from being safe enough to consider living in. I do believe the best bet for our op is Chantilly and/or Plaza-Midwood (though again, not the section abutting NoDA.

Southend is another good option, just south of the uptown boundry.

Here is a condo currently for rent:

Eastover, Myers Park, Elizabeth and Dilworth would all be great for you too, but you don't usually find many places there under $1000. Here is a real gem currently for rent in Eastover - if I were looking to rent today, I would jump on this one

Thanks for all the input. The links you sent of condos for rent are awesome...absolutely beautiful and exactly what we are wanting. We plan on renting the first year until we learn the city a little better and can figure out where we want to buy. I just hate sinking more than $900/mo into rent anywhere...the thought makes my stomach hurt a little bit. But thanks again to all who've responded. I sure hope we will end up in Charlotte! It's a beautiful city!
