Hello,

I am starting a new job in Uptown Oct. 1st and am relocating on a *very* tight budget from Franklin, NC (tiny town in western NC). My spouse and dog will stay behind in our small rental cabin, probably until Jan-Feb.

I really hate the idea of getting stuck in a lease on an apartment, as I plan to house-hunt aggressively. I am drawn to the idea of staying an Inntown Suites, possibly one of the two in Matthews. It would actually cost less each month than rent, electricity, water, cable, high-speed internet. I could use my time to concentrate on new job, and if I can't get the mortgage I want right away, I can then look for a rental house to accommodate spouse, me, and the dog.

Does anyone have experience staying at either of the Matthews locations? They are at 9211 and 12895 East Independence Blvd.

Thank you in advance, this forum has been very helpful as I try to plan this move. (The job fell out of they sky - a month ago I had no plans to move!)

Wow! This is amazing. My daughter actually stayed at Inntown Suites while she was waiting to move into her apartment. I can't remember the exact address, but it's the one near Sam Newell Road within walking distance to the Matthews Cinema 10 (a discounted movie theatre). She stayed their for the month of June 2006. Except for the fact that the pungent odor of cigarettes permeated everything in her room, all else went fairly well. The staff tried to help out w/the smoke smell by changing the a/c filter and cleaning the unit, but nothing worked. Seriously, her clothes smelled so bad that when she came to my house to visit, I kept an extra shirt on hand for her to change into. Maybe they have smoke-free rooms-I'd request one, unless of course, you smoke. The rooms are small, but OK for one person-tight for two to live there. There wasn't any problem with crime, just some weirdness-unusual people seem to sort of "live" there. There was a long-term resident above them who beat the furniture (at night) as if they were drums. Another resident would sit in his car (more night-time entertainment) singing along with one of those "I'm so broker-hearted, she left me" love-sick country songs. One evening, he apparently got to loud for everybody (maybe he'd been drinking), and my daughter said people started yelling at hime to "shut-up." The cops weren't called-he just went inside. Truly, her only real complaint was the intense (I can not emphasize how BAD) smell of cigarette smoke in the room. However, this Inn-Town Suites is conveniently located. You can catch a slightly previously released movie for $2.00 or under depending on the day, it's adjacent to restaurants and stores, and it's close to I-485. You can take a short trip down Sam Newell over to Hwy 51 (Matthews-Township), and there are more stores to the left toward Mint-Hill, or you can make a right which takes you into South Charlotte. Both areas are nice for shopping. (I don't like to shop along Independence (Hwy 74) going towards the city-it's congested and dirtier.) If you want to go into historical Matthews, stay straight on Sam Newell Rd. (which eventually becomes Trade St.)-it will take you directly into the center of town. If you continue straight towards Union County down Pleasant Plains Rd. or Weddington Rd, you will encounter more neighborhoods. I bought a house in one of these neighborhoods a little over a year ago, and I love living here, although traffic congestion can be a problem. If you decide to buy a home and need a good agent, let me know. I cannot say enough about the agent who helped me. He's an older gentleman who helped me way beyond what most agents would generally do for their clients. He worked for me as a buyer's agent (you may already know this-you don't pay them-they are paid from the commission from the seller). The most amazing thing is that I found a house that was a For Sale by Owner. Agents generally will not handle a FSBO because they won't make a commission, and there are certain legalities involved. With a lot of work on my agent's part, the sale went through-that's another story. But I thought it worth mentioning.

Excellent information - thank you.

I did ask about non-smoking rooms, and they said they don't specify smoking/non-smoking, but that I could walk through all the available rooms and pick the best one. I'll remember to bring super-smoke-odor-remover along with me, just in case. I have never smoked and I can't believe how nasty rooms smell when that odor builds up. It is literally sickening.

Well, it seems like InTowne Suites is a go!

I'll be curious about your real estate agent's name - the plan is to buy if I can. Fixer-uppers are what we look for, in a more "rural" setting, and no new construction.

Thanks again!

I hope everything goes well for you! Whenever you're ready, I'll be happy to give you the agent's info. If you have any other questions about the area, I'll be happy to tell you what I've learned since living here.

Good Luck!

Ahhh, thanks for the good wishes!

Two years in a rural setting in western NC have just about bankrupted us. I wanted to move a year ago, but DH wanted to give it another year. The reality of rural WNC is - beautiful, quaint, but terribly low paying jobs, if you can even find one. And the cost of living is as high as where I came from - Cincinnati.

So this situation in Charlotte is a blessing from above. Yay! Can't wait!
