Lightbulb Looking for school districts with best Autism support

Hi Everyone,
We are looking to relocate next year to the Charlotte area. Does anyone have any information they could share regarding autism support in the different school districts? Is any one better at supporting them? I have a high functioning son who will be mostly mainstreamed in his school this year and I hate to move him to a district where he'll be set aside in an autism classroom without entering the general ed. population.

HELP?

My daughter has Asperger's and she is mainstreamed at Pitts School Road Elem. in Concord (Cabarrus County). She just leaves her main class for 20-30 minutes a day to work on her issues with a special education instructor. She is very high functioning as well, just has some behavior issues and quirks that could get in her way if we didn't have her issues addressed. In general Cabarrus and Union, I have read have good schools that accomdate mainstreaming kids in the Autism Spectrum. Our daughter just started Kindergarten so I can't tell you yet how things are working out.

McAlpine Elementary in South Charlotte has a program for autistic children that is outstanding. My friend's son has been there for two years and she has been thrilled with his progress.

I can advise that Gaston County is one you want to stay away from.

XNYgirl, can you elaborate as to why you should stay away from Gaston County schools? I have a son that will be transferring to a Gaston County school from Maryland within in the next three weeks who also has a "high level" form of Autism. Are there problems in the Gaston county school system in getting support?

What school is your child scheduled to go to. If it's LIngerfeldt DO NOT let him or her go there. This school is a living nightmare inside of one of the worse nightmare neighborhoods in the city of gastonia. Please do not do it.

I do not beleive that gaston county offers a broad range of services for Autism support. I am not well versed on Autism so please excuse me for not knowing what the background or understand what the needs are. However, I do know the gaston county school sytem and I have experience with them.

Please PM if I can be of help. Let me know which school it is, if you know.
Also, go to google and do a great school seach and see the numbers for yourself. You really have to stay on top of the the teachers and administrators in gaston county or else they are less likely to really put your childens needs ahead of the behavior challenged kids. Sorry to alarm you, but this school system needs a huge overhaul. I'm sorry I just assumed it was k-5, is your child in middle or High school?

XNY
