I was under the impression that the new wal mart's parking lot was going to connect with the neighboring coliseum shopping center parking lot, therefore exchanging traffic, and bringing life back to the old coliseum center, however, this does not appear to be the case. How is Walmart going to help to revive the area if it's closed off from everything else?
If you look at the plans the city has for the stretch of Independence between Eastway and Ablermarle, you'll see that the Coliseum Shopping Center is slated to be rezoned to a office complex in the far future. Likewise, looks like the old shops across the streets will become a greenway/park, and a possible transit stop.
The Walmart shopping center is really the only building in that area that has multiple access to different roads. And although I would hate to sound pessimistic, Walmart in this area is really the only kind of retail this area can support. There's only so much you can do on an Expressway with limited control-of-access.
That Norman Rockwell view of Monroe Road cracked me up. I guess they are going to knock the whole thing down and start from scratch if they want it to look like that.
Maybe the address is Pierson Drive, but there is a turn directly from 74 to go into the WalMart parking lot so most people would say it is off of 74.
Speaking of the turn from 74 into WalMart, I am actually glad it is there now. It makes a nice cut through and saves me a few minutes on my rush hour commute.
May I was where you got that impression? WalMart is not one to "share" business so I assumed from the get go that their lot would be closed off.
What really sucks about the exit from WalMart onto 74 is that people are pulling out and trying to cross the 4 lanes to get to Albermarle.
I got the impression by looking at every other wal mart in this town. Every last one of them share access by connected parking lots with their neighboring stores. If you know of one that doesn't, show me.

I am not a big enough fan of WalMart to have visited every one in the Charlotte metro area. I have, however, seen plenty in other places where they don't share access with other nearby stores.
