When I think of exclusive neighborhoods in Charlotte the first to come to mind is Myers Park and the second is Eastover. I have read newspaper accounts that Eastover is the most "silk stocking." This is not necessarily money but old money and clout.
There are few people first coming to Charlotte who have not been lost on Queens and Queens. You just about have to live there to know where you are going. I would say that is exclusive.

Ballantyne is a very nice new area, but does not have the history of these other neighborhoods. Dilworth is a former nice neighborhood that is being renewed. We all love Dilworth; and, of course, Morrowcroft and Foxcroft.

I think the person on the other thread was talking about McGee Road area off Highway 16. I found some homes that resembled castles. Your car would be garaged in the courtyard like the horses used to be back in the old castles. I think a good security system could make these homes super secure. I sometimes just tour the area to see what has changed and I loved these homes. They were very unique.

I personally do not like gated neighborhoods. I think they are unfriendly and that is not Southern.

You're completely out of line and have absolutely no clue!
I live very close to the Ballantyne Country Club and it doesn't even compare to the Eastover properties!

Question "eclusive" Or "prestigious"?

I wonder if we're not confusing "exclusive" with "prestigious"? According to the dictionary "exclusive" means limited to possession, ownership, or use by a single individual or group while "prestigious" means exerting influence by reason of high status." In reality there are no exclusive neighborhoods in Charlotte because they are illegal. As a child growing up in a northern city after WWII, there were exclusive neighborhoods: neighborhoods where because of deed covenants - I guess this is how it worked - certain groups (usually because of color or religion) could not buy houses. I was a child at the time and so do not know the details, but I do remember that it worked. We can not and do not have such neighborhoods today. Exclusivity is limited only by money.

On the other hand, we do have prestigious neighborhoods: neighborhoods where people who influence what happens in the city live. These would most certainly be the old neighborhoods near the center city, and not the new ones on the outskirts.

I mean no disrespect, but if the original poster truly means to live and has the means to live in an 'exclusive' area...would that poster be asking advice on the internet?

He/She posted they saw "really big" houses on their bikeride....

Why is the effort being put into debating about the most "really big" houses around town?

I have never indicated that I want to live or have the means to live in an exclusive area. In fact, I have absolutely no interest living there. I am merely trying to understand the power structure of the city.

Yeah, I like to ride my bike at least 5 times a week for 20+ miles. Keeps you in great shape and you see a lot! Riding a bike != poor and can't afford a car.

Sorry that I used the expression "really big houses" rather than choosing a fancier word. I wish I would have grown up in the U.S. like you, then I might have a more extensive vocabulary

I think many people around here put effort into answering questions because they want to help regardless of me wanting to buy a house in an exclusive area or not. I think it was worthwhile to ask the question in order to understand the city better.

Thanks for everybody for their input and your effort! I also think it might be good to close this thread.

Default Funny How We Judge Quality and upscale

Looked all over Charlotte and Ft. Mill for homes. I was not alone. A few of my friends and I looked together. One friend is looking for under 300,000 but wants 3000 sf. I am looking to spend 400-525,000 and I want a great club house environment and a 3500 plus 3 car garage brick home on at least 1/4 acre. My other friend wants to spend 600-1.5 mil for a very upscale home.

Here is the funny part. We all found potential homes. But what was odd is they were all very similar but in different developments. The huge difference was the people living in certain communities (job/financial wise) were different. Also the lots were different and the aminities also.

But two of us found homes with similar sguare feet while the other came quite close. In fact I even found a home for 539,000 in a great gated comunity with an actual gate opened by a code that was better than what my friend saw in so called upscaale communities including River Run, Ballentine Country Club, and especially East Over Properties which was way overated home wise for the money lol.

For my first buddy he saw some great properties in Northstone, Highland Creek, etc. I love Bridgehampton, Skybrook, Northstone, Audrey Chase. Waiting to look more in Waxwah (sp). My third friend who is a VERY FAMOUS ENTERTAINER is still considering the Ballentine Country Club, River Run, and more. He might have tons of money but he is not giving it away and feels alot of the communities are very over rated price wise.

You know what. I don't want to see this thread ending with a request from you quoting me with your final comments.

I didn't like to see all the debate about areas that all seem good to live in. Every area draws positives and negatives around here...I did not mean to attack you or make you upset. I just wanted to point out that I thought from your original post you seemed to want to live where a private realtor could help you better.

I also have nothing against bicyclists.

Deering Oaks too and yes add Foxcroft and the partsof Carmel rd that have private drives off pf them Also Carmel park lane has had massive growth and appreciation over the past 3 years. Sharon Ave which few people know about has some beautiful homes on it as well. Forest drive over the past few years also in Myers Prk has had several tear downs and new mini-mansions built alsong that street. also on Shoreham which runs into Forest also in Myers Park.
