I'm about at my breaking point. I almost got out of my car this morning after some jackass in a Lexus turned right on red RIGHT in front of me as I was going through a green light.

But then I would have been the one getting arrested.

Come on, Mooresville police. Get out of your car and write some tickets.

People pull that stunt all the time on Independence. I'm barreling down the road at 45/50 miles an hour and some dipwad turns right on red 30 feet in front of me.

The title says "running red lights" but the comments aren't about that.

On the actual title subject...years ago I was on Idlewild, sitting at the light at Independence, heading east. A good buddy was right behind me. It was late, probably 1-2 in the morning. The light in my direction turned green, and I took off. Almost immediately I stomped the brake with both feet, and a freight truck (like the largest Penske 2 axle trucks) went through the red light so close to the front of my car that I could see the individual beams of my headlights on the side of the truck. My little Escort rocked in the truck's wash. He was doing well over the speed limit. If I waited half a second longer to hit the brakes, I probably wouldn't be writing this.

I still don't know if was my peripheral vision, sixth sense, or what caused me to brake. The lesson I took away from it is that I never move on a green light unless I've looked every direction at least twice.

I agree that people turning right can be a PITA. I've seen people wait....and wait.....and then turn right into my lane just as I get to them. Looking behind me there often isn't a car to be seen. Some people simply do not consider the logic of what they're doing, and of there is a better option.

Looks like I'm not the only one seeing this as an epidemic. It seems to me that not only people are running a red light, but they are going through it when the other traffic has a green.

I wasn't clear in my comment, the people I am complaining about don't stop at the red light before turning. When turning right on red, you're still supposed to come to a complete stop.

I think people waiting... and waiting and then turning into traffic is a Charlotte original.. I've never experienced it until I got here.

It's happened in other cities but it's a daily event in Charlotte..

Some days I'm really scared driving from work... LOL

I've always appreciated the folks who just sit there at the red. You see their car sitting there, biding it's time, and then right before you are able to fly through the intersection, they decide to ever so slowly turn right, right in front of your vehicle, after they've given their decision to turn sufficient time.

The worst is at places like Sardis and Independence. People turn out slow and you're not sure if they will be staying in the right turn only lane or if they will slowly zag over to the far left.

Nice.

How about when I'm heading in from Waxhaw at 5:30 am and no one is behind me and it never fails, someone will blow the stop sign coming out of their neighborhood to get in front of me only to hold me up most of the time.
I can somewhat understand in heavy traffic when no one will let you out, but come on! What's the rush at 5:30!

That is when the Hardee's biscuits are coming out fresh of the oven.
