I started working a few weeks ago and am finally getting to experience traffic firsthand. Some days it's awful, and it takes me over an hour to get somewhere when it would normally take me 20 minutes or so without traffic. I bought a GPS system, since my job requires a lot of driving. My question is for those of you who have a GPS and subscribe to the traffic service (sorry I don't know the exact name for this). How helpful is this service? Does it really reroute you around the gridlocked streets, and does it get you to work quicker? How much does this service cost, and is it worth it?

Where do you live and work and at what times do you come and go?

Traffic is bad no matter where you go. Learn the back roads and that might help cut down on the gridlock.

I live in Waxhaw and drive different places daily - anywhere from South Charlotte to uptown and in between. After dropping my kids off at school, I leave from the Weddington area anywhere between 7:20 and 7:40 am. I have learned some of the backroads, but what I really want to know is how the traffic receivers work on GPS systems, how much it costs to subscribe, and if it is worth it.

I have a Magellan and that was not an option with mine. If I get caught in traffic I just punch in re-route and the GPS gives me other options.

Traffic here is not great but I honestly do not think it is that bad. Compared to commuting from Long Island to NYC on the L.I.E, I will take 485 and 77 any day. I have also learned some work arounds for when 485 is real bad. My biggest complaints here are people not using turning signals, especially when switching lanes, people on the side roads who see you coming doing 45-55 and decide they need to pull out in front of you even though there is no one behind you and than do less than the speed limit and when there are accidents they halt traffic rather than divert traffic around the accident. But overall I do not think it is too bad.

Traffic here is a dream compared to many places, but it isn't perfect. The traffic re-route system on most GPS is mostly for major changes in roadways due to construction, it won't really help you with accidents and such, which are the normal delays.

It really depends on where you live in the metro area. Leaving 15 min earlier in some cases can save you 45 min on your drive in depending where you are...

Dont even start about personal drivers. They are as horrible as the traffic here. I'm not going to get started about drivers though because I'll go on and on and on and on!!!! LOL
