Schools: Stay away from City of Monroe schools. Indian Trail, Sun Valley are much better. Can't speak for Matthews schools.

Houses: I'm a Yankee... so I'm not a big fan of home construction techniques used here in general.
Some are better than others though, so buyer beware is the golden rule here.

Monroe has one big advantage: lower Union county taxes, but again try for something outside the city school district IMO.

Quality of life: Traffic is bad anyplace near 74 until you get East of Monroe.
Restaurants in Monroe pretty much suck (horrible service is the norm it seems but there are a few exceptions)
Matthews is worse for traffic but better for restaurants.

If you are districted right you can be in the City of Monroe but still be in Sun Valley schools.... and try for Union Power Co-Op for the best deals on utility bills and utility repairs too. HVAC service is MUCH lower through them and all my utilities come on the same bill which is very convenient.
