There are specific groups on meetup for various interests; there are also some whose purpose is just to get folks together, doing things. Some groups are on meetup, but they never hold get-togethers, or only one or two people show up. Here are 3 very successful social meetup groups I know of:
I've found most success meeting folks by getting involved in what interests me: parenting, local food, my church. I met a new friend last summer by volunteering at the Atherton Market.
I've also met several friends via facebook, friends of friends, etc. I saw that a fb friend of mine in Asheville had another fb friend here, I enjoyed her comments, asked to meet for coffee: ta da! An afk, f2f friend! (away from keyboard, face to face)
For some reason, it's hard to make that first gesture - asking someone if they want to meet for coffee, or a walk around Freedom Park. And it can take some juggling of schedules! But waiting for the other people to make the first move - then calling them cliquish if they don't - doesn't get results!
From Merriam Webster (the people what make the books with the words)
Definition of CLIQUE
: a narrow exclusive circle or group of persons; especially : one held together by common interests, views, or purposes
— cliqu·ey \ˈklē-kē, ˈkli-\ adjective
— cliqu·ish \ˈkli-kish\ adjective
— cliqu·ish·ly adverb
— cliqu·ish·ness noun
I recommend Go Social. I've done a few things with them and met some very nice people.
