Just made this trip last week.

As everyone else has said, the trip is a moderately easy trip. The mountain passes are well planned, and there are only a handful of really steep grades. When you are going up a steep grade, the highway adds an additional lane for slower traffic. Going down is well marked. I usually don't use my gas pedal going down, just let my car and gravity do the work. The fog is really bad at night, and VA has a lot of deer that eat along side the road between midnight and 6am. A daytime trip is the best.

Gas prices: You'll get the best price if you top off your tank while in Ohio, and then fill up again in Wytheville, VA. Absolutely do not leave Charleston, WV with less than a half tank of gas.

Thanks. I definitely will be traveling during day. If I move, the date will be the first week in April, and hopefully there will not be any unexpected snowfall. I am thinking that if I start out at 7am, and with a couple of brief stops, I should be able to make it to Salisbury by 4pm. I viewed a few videos on youtube (driving thru wv mountains) and the incline did not seem that steep...just very winding in certain areas. I have been up thru the smoky mountain national park; so if driving the wv mountains is similiar to that, I should be okay.

Actually, that route through WVa is far easier than the route through Asheville....I am not a fan of mountains, so, I take the WVa route to Chicago rather than I-40. I can even drive the WVa route! (you have no idea how amazing that is!) I use my IL transponder to pay for the tolls...much easier than trying to keep cash handy.

You'll do well. Keep a peppy song on the radio and you'll be fine!

Thanks...I feel somewhat better about the trip. If I don't get the job in Salisbury, I definitely will make the drive this summer just to see if this really is somewhere that I would like to live.
