Huntersville and Fort Mill are virtually equidistant from uptown Charlotte, but the traffic on I-77 north or the city always seems to be much worse than coming down to Fort Mill, making it seem longer.

Huntersville is closer to UNCC area, Fort Mill closer to Southpark area and Ballantyne. Just depends on which part of Charlotte you prefer.

You said you weren't even referring to commuting though. 77 north of Charlotte is really only bad at rush hour and sometimes over the weekend in the summer. And even during rush hour 77 coming from SC isn't exactly always smooth sailing

Look up the crime stats for York County/Rock Hill, compare them to Fort Mill/Mint Hill. There's no comparison. Rock Hill is dangerous. I work all over SC and the vast majority of Rock Hill is no place I'd want to be at night.
