Ok, my family will be moving to Mecklenburg Co. fairly soon and we're really impressed so far with the area (compared to our native Ohio). However, we're a bit bummed and disappointed that there is no zoo in the locale. With all the growth and development that Charlotte has seen this past decade or so, I'm somewhat surprised that a zoo is not part of the mix.

Does anyone know whether there are REAL plans to bring a zoo to Charlotte? If not, then what are my options for zoos within a 50 mile radius? Thanks for your feedback!

We're centrally located to two great zoo's within a 90 minute drive. Columbia, SC and Greensboro, NC. Adding a zoo to Charlotte would probably be overkill IMHO.

There is Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville which I've heard good things about.

No plans that I know of. Closest real zoos are:

NC Zoo™ - North Carolina Zoo : Zoo Homepage

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden

but they are more than 50 miles. There is North Carolina Animal Park | Lazy 5 Ranch which is closer but I don't call it a real zoo.

The NC zoo is in Asheboro and is close enough to make a nice day trip.

NC Zoo™ - North Carolina Zoo : Zoo Homepage

Our state zoo is special for several reasons. It is the largest "walk-through" natural-habitat zoo in the world, the first in the United States, and only one of two state-owned zoos in the United States. The General Assembly studied the feasibility of establishing a zoo in the late 60s. Money was allocated and construction began in 1974, so this is a fairly "new" zoo, created to be a viable environmental habitat and to include room for expansion.

The zoo also has an impressive teaching/education component. We are very fortunate that folks had the foresight to create such a wonderful habitat for folks to enjoy.

I for one would love a zoo closeby. I am surprised this has been overlooked by Charlotte..

If I recall, NC Zoo was chosen to be located in Asheboro as a compromise since it is near the geographical center of the state. Charlotte probably won't have its own zoo for anytime in the near future.

I really hope a zoo or aquarium never come to Charlotte. Animals do not need to be caged up or held in tanks. It is a terrible life for them. I feel bad for the animals at Riverbank, because they are in nothing more than cages. Asheboro is a bit better, because the animals can run around, but the budget for that zoo has been cut so deeply, I wonder if the animals are getting anything more than marginal care. Many of the exhibits are empty.
