There are many different websites, blogs, news reports, etc. for rating surgeons around town. But, how reliable are those ratings?

Does anyone have a resource you used that proved to be a reliable source of information about a doctor's abilities?

(Don't worry - this is not our only source of research.)

Lawyers have a database that they pay for that they can search the doctor and find out if there were any malpractice suits against him/her. There are several websites and it is hard to find out if they are reliable. Health grades.com can tell you if there were any sanctions against the doctor of the state they practice in. Also, the state where the license is issued (check the web site) you may be able to find out if there is any discipline etc.

I hope this helps. Usually be recommendation, is how you get the good recommendations. For example, one of the top doctors in the field in NY recommended a fellow colleague that works here in North Carolina.

Thanks, not really anything new, but I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Lack of sanctions does not always equal great surgeon, especially in a known-to-be risky procedure.

We have recommendations from other doctors. Now we are looking for independant resources for more details on side effects after the procedure. It really depends on the surgeons skills.

I wish you the best MSM. Risky procedures: well, one question that I learned to ask the doctor was how many of these procedures have you done and what is your success rate. Depending on where you need to travel - Duke might be an option. Yes, everything depends on the surgeons skills. I had the best in New York and when I had to I first went out to the Cleveland Clinic. I wish you the best!!!!
