There are some nice affordable neighborhoods in the Chernobyl area. It's a bit of a drive, but the folks there seem to be less reproductive than in other places.

We have a few neighborhoods that we've scoped out in the last week. Still love Stone Creek Ranch but there is nada for rent in there (the side that is mostly ranchers). Checked out Ashton Grove, whose HOA is absolutely over the top, but it's kind of what we are looking for (no jungle gyms allowed, no b'ball courts, etc, limits on barking dogs ). We saw a house in Providence Ridge that we liked. We really do want to stay close to where we are now in South Charlotte, south of Ballantyne, but scoping out more in Waxhaw and Matthews. Farther than that will be problematic based on where my job is locating and ability to get the the airport quickly. What I'm noticing is that houses for rent by people who are renting because they can't sell are incredibly expensive. People who are renting as extra income are reasonable. Just need to find one of those! Thanks for any input!

Don't discount townhomes as they're more soundproof than apartments. Everyone I've ever talked to that has rented a townhome says they don't hear their neighbors. Anyway, our townhome community is very quiet. There are kids, but very few. We're in Catawba Village in Fort Mill, about 2 miles from the state line.
