Hey, we have 2.5 million people now, a large component of which came from NYC or other cities where they'd be used to good, fast, healthy and tasty takeout joints. Unless all these folks somehow lost their palates and preferences on the way down here, the free market suggests that supply should meet demand. It certainly has in places a lot smaller than Charlotte in the South (Charleston, Raleigh/Durham). It's not an un-Southern thing either. The idea of whipping up a quick farm-to-table lunch of homemade ingredients is part of the historically and classically South.
2.5 million people where?????...Goodness!!!! The Charlotte-Gastonoa-Salisbury Combined Stat. Area????
It's all about portion control. You can eat anywhere and still not gain weight.
Ahh, food snobs.
maybe, but artery-clogging food is gonna be bad for you even in small amounts if you eat it regularly. eating healthy is being wise and a good steward of your body.
I work in uptown Charlotte and I usually bring my lunch 80% of the time...the other times I eat at Newks...but that can get pricey. They have really good salads there...I usually get the Cobb and it's delish!
I did discover a hidden treasure. There is a truck that sells food on S. Tryon between Trade St and 4th...I believe they're there everyday except Wednesdays..the name on the truck is "Clover Joes"....they make the best philly cheesesteak sandwich ever! They also have other items, but I haven't tried them. My co-worker says their meatball parm is excellent. It's not the healthiest, but it's very yummy!

I was going to say - a lot of the food the OP mentioned in the first post can be found on food trucks! I don't know the food truck situation for downtown, I usually find them in the evenings in NoDa or SouthEnd.
The Herban Legend food truck (don't you love that name?!) has a great shawarma! And, not so healthy, their French Dip is *fantastic*!
The Maki Taco food truck is usually outside Atherton Market on Saturdays - all kinds of tacos and hibachi goodies.
This won't help your lunchtime woes, but there's a food truck rally tomorrow, Friday the 16th, in South End from 4 - 9. Food Truck Friday « historic south end
I can get by very easily on a pound of Godiva chocolates.
