Relocated to Charlotte and now looking to switch over my DL, Insurance, & Registration. I'm also looking to trade in my car for a small pickup. What is the best way to avoid having to pay the 3% Highway Use Tax on my current car since I'm about to purchase the pickup?

Should I get my license, switch over NC insurance, and then trade in my current car with out-of-state plates? That would leave me with only have to pay the Highway Use Tax on the newer pickup. Is that possible? Any legal problems?

I would be looking to do this within the same week, if there are any time frames for having to registering a vehicle after getting a NC License.

Thanks

Upon moving to North Carolina from another state, you must register your motor vehicle at the expiration of the time granted by the reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and your prior state of residence (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted, whichever occurs first.

Thank you, that helps a lot. Will grab my license and within the 30 days trade my vehicle in.
