I think she means Denver Colorado....
But of course it is getting worse... The city is growing...so in general as a city grows crime will grow. There are safer parts of the area and of course there are parts of the city in which you dont want to be after dark. Most seem to be concentrated in a few areas.... some others on here will be better at pin pointing them for you.
Good Luck with your move. I'm sure you will love it here

Ofcourse, the negative news gets the media attention, there are these crimes everywhere, it's just how much media attention that the news including the observer which is fed by WCNC.com decides to give them. If this is a deal breaker for you, then yes, you should reconsider staying in safe Colorado. I do beleive that denver is full of crime too.

Hi LoveBoating,

I remember you asking a similar question a few months ago. I'm sure it is scary moving to a new city and you have some very valid concerns. The short answer to your question is no. Actually IIRC, crime in Charlotte is down this year. As XNYgirl said the media will report most crimes because that's what sells. Also remember our local media covers a large area, not just events in Charlotte proper. As lovesMountains said in your other thread Charlotte area Crime

Quote:
Try not to worry or blow things out of proportion. What's going on here is that we now have about 750,000 people in and around the city - almost 1.5 million in the metro area.

With that kind of population there will be crime. However, as long as you are proactive - don't leave your garage door up all day or night, lock your car, hide the valuables in it first, don't shop by yourself at 2 in the morning - that kind of stuff you should be fine! We have about 80 murders a year in Charlotte - only 3 or 4 were random last year - every other murder was either a person involved in drugs, gangs or a domestic situation. Going from a small town where you are now to any big city you would find at least this much crime, and in a lot of cases even more.
I hope this helps!

I am lived here all my life (except a 5 year Boston blip) Crime is worse - but nothing compared to big cities - Our news crews are bored and make a big deal out of little things. Yes there is crime but it always seems like it is mostly in the "Bad Areas" or husbands and wives killing eachother. Charlotte is a lovely place to live!

I am not sure why LoveBoating keeps asking the same questions over and over again either.

Don't think so. In 2005 Detroit had 39.3 murders per 100,000 people. Charlotte had 12.6. In 2006, Detroit had 47.1 per 100k. Anyone have the Charlotte stat for 2006?

Default Crime..........uh, well, ???

As was stated earlier, the media's job is to find "the news". Unfortunately (or fortunately), crime tops the news stories.

We moved here in 1987 and saw some crime nearby our first house. No major crime, but still crime. After 5 years, we moved up to a bigger house.

As we get closer to retirement, we want to make sure we are living where it is save and affordable.

After 12 years of searching for the right spot, we have found it!!!!!

We are staying right here!! I have traveled the country for business, always wondering how much I would like to live in the different areas.

Overall, it is pretty hard to beat this area if you can figure out how to live with the humidity and protect yourself (as needed) to repel any crime you may have to deal with.

Reply for above statement:
First of all, we completely forgot that we had done a Thread asking about the crime in the Charlotte area. Second, I look at the charlotte.com website almost everyday (especially during the week) and I do read (almost on a daily basis) about some kind of crime(s) happening in the Charlotte area, so, yes, it does/did worry us. We know that crime is everywhere, but some cities/towns have a lot less of it than others. We just happen to live in a town, Parker (turning into a city fast) that has very, very little crime in it. Absolutely nothing like what we hear about in some of the cities around Denver, CO and in Denver. Where our house is now, we (accidentally) left the front door to our house completely UNLOCKED for an entire week and nothing happened (luck, yes, but it happened). We have left (again, accidentally) our garage door open all day during the (with the door going from the garage into the house unlocked) and again, nothing happened. Get the idea that our house is in a VERY safe area.
So, even though we did ask the question before (didn't remember that though), we were concerned. We are planning on living somewhere in Huntersville.
