My husband and I will be moving to Charlotte this summer from Virginia and we are wondering what the best way is to go about finding a condo or apartment for rent in the uptown area. Here are some specifics for our move:
1. Move Date: Late June
2. Prince Range: $1,200-$1,300/month
3. Location Preference: 4th ward primarily, but any safe location close that's walkable to the Hearst Tower area.
4. I'll be commuting a little east of the city, but that's not a problem for me.
5. We need a pet friendly building.
We basically want to live in an area that's walkable to work and shops/activities. Should we simply drive around the uptown area and look ourselves, or should we get a broker? I know that most condos are privately owned, so how do we go about finding rentable condos?

Thanks so much for your help!
padmapper is a good place to start. Unfortunately, you're going to have to weed through a lot of weekly rental ads for the DNC at this time.
The Harris Teeter building (Fifth and Poplar) has some rentals. There are also some all-rental buildings closeby like Catalyst (though it's a couple blocks South at 3rd and Tryon).
In your price range, you should be able to find some really nice 1 bedrooms.
If you're looking for a one bedroom you could have any nice apartment in the South End for that price. Easy commute to Hearst Tower (walk, free trolley or light rail) and a nice little neighborhood. My husband and currently rent a 2 bedroom at Camden Southend and they have raised their prices a lot recently which is why we bought a house and will be moving out within the month, but the price for a one bedroom is right around what you want to pay, there is a gym, pool, covered parking and the whole place is gated. We have enjoyed being so close to everything! I'd also check out the Circle, Mosaic, 1225 South Church, or some of the condos people are renting over near Garden District Drive.

The problem with South End is that it's not really walkable to many shops or grocery stores.
