I'm not an Apple person, however Sprint's 3G is ****ty right now and I'm a loyal Sprint customer. Sprint is in the process of shutting down towers and optimizing all of its cell sites in anticipation of its new LTE network which will be up in the Charlotte area by this fall. I live near Uptown, I had full signal and now it's half the signal strength. However tho, I will upgrade to a 4G LTE Android by this summer.

You'll get 3G in most areas but Sprint's 3G is pretty crappy in many areas. It has significantly slower speeds than AT&T and Verizon. The absolute worse of all iPhone carriers. They are the cheapest though and still offer unlimited data.

If you want to try them out for the areas you'll be in, I recommend you get the iPhone and see how the coverage suits your needs and keep it if you like it. I believe you get 30 days where you can return the phone before you are locked into a contract.

I switched to Sprint a few weeks ago and got the iPhone 4S. The service was HORRENDOUS. I took advantage of their Risk free guarantee (return everything within 3 days if not satisfied). I immediately switched back to AT&T. Sprint tried telling me that the phone was the problem and wanted to give me another, but said that they wouldnt extend the risk free guarantee another couple of days so I could be sure. Very displeased with how they handed the situation and I absolutely would NOT recommend switching.

Unlimited data means nothing when the speed is but a fraction of the other carriers.

Running Speedtest on AT&T locally I get ~6.5Mbps down, ~2.5 Mbps up.
My friends on Sprint with the same phone, same location get ~1.5Mbps down, 0.4 Mbps up...

By comparison AT&T LTE (HSPA+) on the new iPad in the area returns ~25Mbps down, ~12 Mbps up.
I should have Verizon LTE speeds quantified in the next few days.

No complains on ATT iPhone 4s all areas around Charlotte.
Some dead areas in SC, but for most part is OK.

When on the road I also carry the Verizon Wireless FiveSpot (wireless hub) that provides internet to my iPad & Macbook + kids iPads (up to 5 devices)
Same as ATT, Verizon has a nice coverage throughout Carolinas.

I have verizon and for the most part have been happy with it. I have the iPhone 4s with unlimited data ... grandfathered in from my original plan.

The problem is, I already have Sprint iphone 4s. I do regret it now. They are upgrading their towers though.

If you have a bad connection in your home, call customer service and they will send you an "airave" free of charge to improve your service. Here is more info on the airave: Sprint AIRAVE™
I have sprint and have stayed loyal b/c of their great customer service. The LTE stuff in the fall that is mentioned in this post is good news!
