Yeah it one of the benefits of buying a car and keeping it until it can't be driven anymore.

We had to get a new one. Putting gas in a H3 is not cheap or fun. I can't imagine the gas bill on a H2, especially if you drive a lot. Ugh.

Moving to Charlotte from California. In CA we pay annual registration. In Charlotte, do you pay personal tax AND registation, or just personal tax?

Agree with previous poster that paying personal tax when you already paid sales tax feels like double-dipping. Definitely not helping new car sales!

In North Carolina, everyone pays the $28 annual registration fee. The annual property tax is then assessed by the county of registration. The city of registration may also have a fee, such as Charlotte's $30 annual fee.

I believe that the county uses a variation of the Magic Eight Ball when determining the value of your car for tax purposes.

As I mentioned above, before you can pay the $28 fee to register your vehicle, you have to pay the 3% of sales price Highway Use Tax. You have to pay this even if you bought the car in another state. There are a few cases where you can deduct sales tax paid in another state but you should read up on it so you will have the right documents. If you are moving here, it's important to know this since it probably easier to get this stuff while you are still in your old location.

What if I decide to wait a few years to turn the title in?

The first year you own the car, they will set the tax value as the sales price of the car reported to the state.

So if you buy a $35,000 vehicle, your property taxes in 2011 would be $438.76. They will also tack on an additional $30 for the city license tag so your total tax bill will be $468.76. This bill will go down as the car depreciates, but the Charlotte/Mecklenburg tax office IMO, overvalues vehicles.

You will also have to pay a one time $1167 highway use tax to the state.

It's a lot of tax to put a car on the road.
Any idea how the one time fees work if we were given a car from a relative in another state? We live in Cabarrus.

Hope that you don't get pulled over or in an accident. Your insurance company may also look at you sideways if your mailing address isn't in the same state as your car registration.

If you buy the $35,000 vehicle, but trade is $20,000, do you pay tax on the sticker price or $15,000.
In Pa I paid 6% on the $15,000. In a few months the car will need to be titled in NC. What will I be taxed on, $35,000 or $15,000?
