Relocating to Mooresville, wondering about jobs...
Hi everyone....
Our family visited Statesville NC in May, and my husband & I fell in love with the Mooresville area. We have decided to put our house on the market this week, however my husband has been searching for a job since we came home in May. He even flew in to attend a Job fair hosted by the Charlotte observer on Sept 7th and unfortunately the companies he flew in to see were no shows at the fair. My husband is personable, and very smart. He is currently working as a Telecom Engineer for a major utility and has been with the company for about 12 years. He has a bachelors degree in architecture, and has also worked hands on in construction, and as a project manager. He is qualified for many different positions, yet he has not gotten one call for a position in NC over these past 6 months. We are wondering if prospective employers see our NY address on his resume and don't want the hassle. We are ready to move as soon as he finds a job, as our house should sell very easily. We have 2 small children, so we can't just sell our house & move with no job & health insurance. Has anyone else who has relocated encountered this? In addition to that, if anyone has a position available, or knows of a position available please feel free to email me. I can either put yoou in touch with my husband or forward his resume. I didn't mean to ramble on, but I am getting desperate, and I feel like my husband is losing hope!!!! anyone have any advice? i would welcome it!!!!!
Thanks!!!

Hi Barbara - let me give you my take on your situation. The reason your husband is not getting calls is not specifically because the address on his resume is New York. It's more because he is still in NY, versus being here. There are a lot of people who are already here looking for jobs so that some employers don't go to the trouble of dealing with people who are out of state.
They basically have pools of people to choose from here. What your husband desparately needs is a good head hunter. With his qualifications there is no reason that I can see for him not to find a job. In my experience the way it tends to work around here is that many larger companies use agencies to pre-screen people for them. They only seem to make appointments to interview people who have been recommended by an agency they deal with. One agency here that I know is big at finding people for openings at the banks is Ajilon. They deal with lots of type jobs, not sure if your husbands field is one of them, but you could see if they could point you in the right direction if they don't handle his type job. Most big companies don't seem to even look at resumes individuals submit. They must come from an agency like Ajilon who does pre-screening and checking of references. Tell your guy not to be so downhearted - he just needs a new approach!
Here is their website - good luck!

I agree with loves mountains - but also, a lot depends on what you do, the demand for the job and supply of people like he said.
We have found higher end jobs, management in all areas, companies will take the ones with talent no matter where they reside. They will take the ones and even offer an interview on who matches their credentials.
Some companies also are hesistant as they will feel you will want them to pay relo costs and on the other side I have seen many companies offering relo again it depends on the need for the job and the pool of people with their credentials in an area.
try different search engines using the various titles of his experience and see what pops up - i have posted this one many times but will again indeed. com searches all the engines for you - and many that I never heard of. you can set up automatic updates each day
Your husband appears to be diverse - duke energy is in nc, you may want to search their website and see if you can apply direct without a head hunter.
Also, the next time you are there, buy a cell phone with a NC tel# or even rent a PO box as along as if they call him for an interview he can fly down -
good luck

thanks so much for your replys.... You could imagine how frustrating this is for us. The headhunter idaa is great, ane i already explored, but worth exploring again. The cell phone & PO box in NC was actually my idea too, and my husband said it would seem like he was being deceitful. Well, we will keep on trying. thanks again for your replies!!!

you probably should try a few headhunters, they can also assit with your resume remember, it is like an ad, designed to make the phone ring and offering you a job, the first impression of you and what you do is the resume.
