Charlotte hidden tunnels?
On the Observer's main page today there is a giant ad for a scare story from Newschannel 36 about a hidden network of tunnels underneath Charlotte. Anyone know what they are talking about?
I think I will DVR the story even though I fully expect it to be overblown bull but it makes me curious so I guess the ad worked.

Yep. There is a neat little place under there. Lots of the "things" that make the city function are under there. It was '02 when I was allowed to go in there, I think.
Also, some very large gold nuggets have been found down there.

Been hearing about these tunnels under uptown for years. There was a history of gold mining in Charlotte for a very brief time during the 1800's and these tunnels were part of that.

Old gold mining shafts. There have been stories about it in the past.
There's also a few tunnels between skyscrapers. You can actually walk all the way from the Duke building on Tryon and Stonewall to the Square without stepping outside once. It's nice on a rainy day but also killed street retail downtown.

I remember seeing a map of them a few years back, the map might even have been on here.
