We had an interesting experience at COSTCO in Matthews yesterday. We smelled smoke while shopping. Clearly, something was burning. I told a store employee who said "they are aware of it" and went about her work. Really - no call to the Fire Department and you *know* something is burning - and it's not in the bakery. Long and short of it - a customer called the FD who explained the situation. Fire trucks roll up and a fire fighter had to tell COSTCO manager to set off the alarm and evacuate everyone in the building. Simple process under normal conditions. However, COSTCO does not have a public address system, so store employees had to work from the back to the front of the store herding people as they went - all to the tune of a blaring alarm and flashing strobe lights and employees who initially were not sure whether THEY should leave the building. Maybe little training is in order for employees AND the company could spend a few dollars on a PA system OR at a minimum buy a coupe of bull horns that could be used to advise customers when a problem arises that could life and limb in jeopardy.

Oh, and as we were vacating the building, I asked a supervisor whey they did not make an announcement over the PA and her reply after a couple of seconds hesitation - "it's not working." No kidding. After I get outside do I learn from an employee that they don't have a PA system. The next time I see the supervisor, I will ask her why she felt it necessary to lie.

Costco obviously handled this situation poorly. May I ask, though, why you did not leave as soon as you smelled smoke? You have a responsibility to look after you own safety.

I absolutely agree, and often rant about people relying on others to make smart decisions for them. OTOH if I had smelled smoke, but it wasn't an obvious danger to me (can't see it, maybe it's burnt food, not that strong a smell, etc.) I probably wouldn't have headed for the exit either. My senses of curiosity and adventure would have caused me to at least find out a little more info.

They don't have a PA system? Well then, that's a dealbreaker for me. I shop exclusively at stores with top notch PA systems. I will never shop there again!

Any chance that they might sell bullhorns there?

PA or no PA, you're better off at a BJs Club.

I don't get it. How would their aisles ever get a clean-up if they have no PA?

Ya, I'm sure the OP would much rather drive 30 miles to get to the closest BJ's from Matthews. Sounds like a sensible plan to me.

If nobody got burned up, then I don't see the issue. Not every situation needs to instill panic in people.
