My very first taste of "corn cake" was in the South. I would have sworn it was a Southern phenomenon. I've never had sweetened cornbread up North. I find it ghastly too.

As for shrimp & grits, I love shrimp and I love grits but again, ghastly as a combo and I've never seen it anywhere but in the South.

I'd knock Price's off the list as I don't consider it "family friendly" since you can't dine in.

Mert's is overrated IMO and it's pricey to boot so it doesn't meet the OP's criteria. It's good enough but not great for sure.

I do enjoy the concept of the King's Kitchen and have great food there.

I've got to give LaWans a try .... hmmmm ... first I'm hearing about it.

1982, IIRC. Maybe 1981. I was a busboy for a few months. I try to get there several times a year for the Brunswick Stew, but I really like all their BBQ.
