IMO, the establishment, including the religious establishment put Jim & Tammy Bakker in the crosshairs because they would not join the political activism ranks of the religious right. The Bakkers were "live and let live" and when they grew to prominence, this couldn't stand.
This is borne out by the vultures such as Jerry Falwell who swooped down when the scandals broke in efforts to take control of PTL. I still remember seeing this windbag of hot air being sent down the waterside shown in the photo above.
Actually, the vast majority of the money collected was raised from donations through people's tithes and offerings as well as signing up to be "Partners" in the "ministry". We are talking big time money here, millions and millions.
PTL had one cable network channel, possibly two at one point, and daily had the "send us your seed offering pitch" I remeber often seeing Jim Baker go as far as to request people send their "last dime", "all of their paycheck" , "whatever is left in your checking account" usually followed by " and God will bless you ten fold for what you give".

The fraud charges stemmed from the money raised for the Grand Hotel in both how those funds were distributed and the fact that they way over sold the timeshares to the point it was not even possible to accommodate those who bought in.
" Bakker "sold" more "exclusive partnerships" than could be accommodated, while raising more than twice the money needed to build the actual hotel. A good deal of the money went into Heritage USA's operating expenses, and Bakker kept $3.4 million in bonuses for himself" -Wikipedia
This was the tip of the iceburg.

Crosshairs. If you are not doing anything wrong, you have no need to sweat over it.
We are all human and make mistakes. It is a whole separate ball game when you are a religous leader and an ordained minister. It is not hypocritical for the common man or any man to hold leaders accountable, starting with religious leaders.

Jim Bakker is a business man, a salesman. He had the skills and personality to do well for himself in business. He chose the easy way. He chose to be a con-man and used religoin as his hustle. I am sure he believes what he was saying all those years as head of PTL. All crazy people believe what they think in their own mind, and not what the facts or reality suggest. Being crazy does not mean you are not capable.

Freroad/Tyler/whoever/......You can split hairs all you want about the "vast majority" of money from the PTL (Pass the loot) empire.....they oversold the timeshares knowing full well it was a scam. You're 100% right. It was a BUSINESS failure w/Jim and Tammy using religion as a means to prey on people. They ruined thousands of lives in the process while Tammy's dog led the good life w/an air conditioned doghouse....(no joke) and Jim was gettin it on w/guys and girls....

Where is the hotel now? Where is the "Lifetime" memberships? They all sold this bag of goods while living like kings and queens...

You did know that Jim had 49 seperate bank accounts in his name, right?

And Falwell was another shyster who was only in it for the publicity to boost his coffers at the church he was leading....

I can't understand how people goto the lengths to make excuses and protect Bakker..... like he's got some type of "force field" around him.....you guys are totally unbelievable..lol

The same could be said for large numbers of TBTF bank & wall street executives. The religion there was the "American Dream" and the results were far worse.

I'm not forgiving him of his crimes which he did go to jail for, but I think many of the things said about the Bakkers were never proven. I only wanted to set the record straight was that the wire fraud charges stemmed from the time share sales and not stealing money from charity.

I am curious about your OP.
I know you said FYI, but there has got to be more on your mind.

What do think / feel about 200k being dropped into such an organization?
That is a lot of money, even for anyone who might be a multi-millionaire, that is a lot of money.
Do you feel it did any good at all? Did this come out of your inheritance money?
Did such a large amount of money have a disasterous effect on your family's finances thus causing major problems?

There has got to be more on your mind.

Well OP, there were millions of gullible people who gave their money to PTL to make the Bakkers super rich. Too bad they couldn't have spent that money to feed starving children.
